I'm looking to pick up a camo coated 12 gauge to use for wild turkey and waterfowl hunting. I'm considering the Mossberg 535 or 835, or the Remington 887. I can't stir up any used offers, so I've turned to the local pawn shops.

Today I came across a gun that the clerk told me was a 24" bbl 835. It had an "extension" at the end of the barrel that had holes in it. I asked the clerk if that was a muzzle brake or a choke and he seemed pretty sure it was a choke. :scrutiny: Not wanting to show the few cards I had, I got him to quote me 299. The other strange thing was that this gun had a camo paint job that looked like the old fatigues, not the mossy oak etc. you see today.

Any advice on this? I looked at 2 other shops with no luck, but I'm really not feeling the first one. Got the cash for a new one, but I'm avoiding the drive and would really like to keep the cash in hands close to home.

I picked up a Benelli Nova in Max 4 camo on GB for $275. By the time I paid shipping and ffl fees it was $330 which was less than I could pick it up locally. I have been very happy with it so much so that I found a 20ga to go with it. Took a lot of ducks with it this past season. Anyway would not forgo the option of the onsite auction sites for the occasional deal.

I bought an 835 in 2001 at walmart with two barrels for $400. It has that same camo like the old fatigues but a lighter color. Its a better turkey gun if you want to use 3.5 inch shells, but its not much for skeet or anything because of the long stroke of the pump

Thanks for your input (and PM's) guys! Yeah, I'm looking for something to take hunting only. I do enjoy skeet and clays, but that hobby is only in my budget when I can go with my uncle ;) A few years down the road I see myself getting a nice o/u for non hunting recreation.

There are several makers who make "ported" choke tubes - the porting looks cool but doesn't do anything except make it harder to clean. It should be removable and changeable if it is a choke tube

Keep an eye on the Dick's Sporting Goods flyers...

I picked up a camo 535 combo with two barrels for $299.....plus it came with a cheapo red dot scope (still works)

I found a 835 waterfowl/turkey combo on Gunbroker.com for $349 NIB. I shoot geese in the fall and turkey in the spring so it is perfect for me. If you like a pump it will fill your needs.

Not a bad price. Might would offer a little less and see if he bites. The fatigue camo paint scheme and no factory ports in the barrel means it's a older 835. They used that camo scheme before they came out with the mossy oak scheme's and ported barrels. Still great guns and will get the job done without any problem. Several companys make ported chokes like the one you described. Once you screw it out, there should be a company name and size on the side.
