After an exciting two hour bidding battle past its original end time, I won the rights to this FN 49 Egyptian 8mm in 95% condition.

As the last second ticked away, I alternated between cheering and pounding myself on the head. All the money I had saved up for a Cal-legal FAL.... gone!

So how did I do, guys? Did I get carried away in the struggle? Or do I now own a battle rifle that can hold its own againts its CAL-legal battle rifle rivals Garand, Cal-FAL, and M1A?

.... bank account looks so forlorn and sad.... so many zeros... on the wrong side...

...

I have 5000+ rounds of good quality 8mm mauser surplus, all corrosive.
I have 2 gallons of windex and an aluminum one-piece rod.
I've got a bunch of mauser stripper clips.

... and no money...

damn that C&R. Everyone told me that I'd go broke if I got an 03, but did I listen? no....

Looks nice! I'm sure it'll do its part if you do yours. I certainly wouldn't want to get in a gunfight with an FN49-armed shooter.

I believe you still have to modify the magazine to require a tool for dissassambly for it to be California legal. I'm not 100% sure on that though. Does the fact that it doesn't have a "protruding pistol grip" make a difference? Hmmn, well, your in Cali so you probably know your state law better then me. You might want to make sure though.

Hey Silver,

We definately need to get together at Burro Canyon sometime. Believe it or not, I just got an FN-49 also. My stock isn't as good as yours and my wife thinks that it has an evil spirit attached to it, but I like it. BTW, I got mine from a local guy for $500. When I get the time, I'll take a couple of photos.

You made a mistake. Send me that rifle right away, I'll reimburse you for it. Besides, what good is a worthless old rifle with a crazy amount of ammunition, and fun built in to boot?

You dun well, man.

Nice. I'd take an FN-49 over a mutilated Cal-FAL anyday. About a year ago I passed up the chance to get an FN-49 (never found out what kind, the guy at the pawn shop just said it was "a 7.62") for $400. Hardly knew anything about them at the time. Been kicking myself for not buying it ever since.

:D

:D :D :D <think of $ $ $> :banghead: :( </think of $ $ $> :D :D

Well I sure am looking forward to it. The gun is certainly cal-legal, because it doesn't even really have a detachable magazine. Back in the AWB days the FN49 was considered having a "detachable magazine" but in reality if you try to detach the FN49's mag it will fall apart in your hands. A little fact that very few people realize is that the feedlips of the magazine are actually BUILT INTO THE RECIEVER. ca does not consider this magazine detachable, but even if it did it would still be legal since no flash/forward pistol/SBR/pistol grip/grenade launcher (although there is an optional grenade attachment that you can buy, it doesn't come with one built in like the sks or mas).

you can see now why the gun was obsolete even before it was released. folks back then thought that mags were a waste of $ and added unecessary weight to a soldier. "Who needs a magazine that you can lose when you can have cheap stripper clips?" was the idea of the day.

i'm going to start working out today so i can shoot this puppy properly. i'm going to need shoulders like Cosmoline who claims that if held properly the Mosin Nagant doesnt hurt at all... :what:

oh, and re: the kidney
I already had way too many guns and girls with liens on that kidney...

oh,

and i decided last night that i am going to sell an imbel parts set that i've been hoarding and buy that $800 cal-fal anyway.

oh, i'm going to be slaving away on overtime for sooooo long....

the problem with being in CA

is that there are SO many guns that one has to get NOW before they are banned / restricted / grandfathered etc.

here's my buy list:

IMBEL CAL-FAL (non-permanently modified). Restricted in CA, may be grandfathered soon.

Sig P228 (already have one with light mount, need one for holster). Will go off-list in 2007, no more out of state sales then. AND SIG discontinued it.

Bulgarian Makarov (will go off-list in 2007, and there are very few to be had generally)

Tokarev SVT 40 (need a semi 7.62 to go with the FN 49)

Suomi sub gun in semi

That seems to be a reasonable price for the gun. Worst case scenario you could probably sell it and get your money back no problems, and still have experienced the gun while you had it. So relax and enjoy. :)

Good choice I love mine I got it some years ago for $340 guess I made out. Remember to open up the gas valve all the way when you start shooting. Then close it as needed. If its to restricted could have bad results. Mine was frozen when I got it and I had to dremel it off and put on a new one which I keep well lubed.

Hi all,
I have had one since in the 80's I have bought and sold many of the Garands, but kept this one. Ammo is cheap and available.

I like them. :what:

big smiles

cool. yup, wish i'd had the money to buy the milsurps of eight years ago, but alas I did not. I was a kid living on my own and working through college. i remember 1903s for 169, garands for 249, etc.

now that i've gotten some financial security... i try vainly to recapture those years.

so although 616 is quite a bit, I don't feel really all that bad as it also represents a certain accomplishment of my own.

...

anyway, i am very excited about this. reading this thread, and thinking about the nature of life and all that, i'm going to be picking up a cal-fal this weekend. it's not really mutilated; the magazine release has simply been replaced with one that does not actually release. it will also come with the original release, and swapping them out is as simple as unscrewing the release and replacing the old one back in.

for $800, it comes with all the 922r parts, the cal-fix, a 10rd magazine, case, and sling. i would like to have an STG-58 original, but well, part of being able to afford these things means that I have to work for CA.

ps: That is a VERY nice picture, Stilleto. Too bad I'm the photographer in the family.

Everytime I see one of these threads I strain myself kicking my own behind. I had one, a mint one. Got tight for money, dropped the price to three bills. Got to the store to reclaim it from consignment just in time to see the smiling bastard who got it. KHAAAAAN!

aha!

so THAT'S the story of cosmoline's FN49.

A Belgian made, highly limited production, all milled, semi-automatic rifle firing a seriously powerful round and equipped with modern peep sights for $300 - i'd be smiling like the cheshire cat too.

i feel your agony cosmo - stories like yours make me want to cling stubbornly on to every last shoulder-busting boomstick in my collection, regardless of how inaccurate, heavy, or downright dangerous it is.

Red paper clip

I have a red paper clip I will trade you for it.:D
OK OK a BOX OF PAPER CLIPS;)
No truly a sweet rifle.
The front plug works as a on/off for the granade launch and can be locked open
or close. If it shots single it needs turn 180 drg.
tune the power strok gas valve till it just feeds. HOT AMMO open her up. Will run just great from light to pretty hot.

Gotta love those FN 49's

The FN49 is a nice rifle. I bought one in 30 06 about 30 years ago for $65 and still shoot with it today. It has been absolutely trouble free although the last few years I must say I do not take it out as often.

I think you will be very pleased with your purchase and you still have one kidney!

I'm sure glad to see that others appreciate cool old rifles like this. I've had an FN49 in 8mm for a good 15 years and my friends just say "What is that thing?". Mine is not in quite as nice shape. Many years ago I cut the top off an old BAR magazine, made it fit. After a lot of tinkering it works great, holds 22 rounds. Sure love all that cheap 8mm ammo on the market now.

The FN49 is an excellent rifle. I had one in 7MM back in the 60's. It was a fine shooter. I regret letting it get away from me.
Hang on to the ones you guys have now. You don't see many of them these days.
