I am fortunate that I still have have good far vision -- but I have trouble focusing on a rear pronghorn sight set forward of the receiver.

Does a peep sight set at the back of the receiver help in this situation?

I have a MINI 30 that came factory with a peep that I really dont like much it's ok for fast and rough shots but for precision work it stinks. Some folks love them but i'd trade it off for a notched site if I could find one for this rifle. All I can recomend is try before you buy.

bushmaster1313, I'm 53 and got prescription glasses at about 50. I put Williams Peeps (fiberoptic front and.050 Twilight in the rear holes) on my 30-30 336 Marlin pasture truck and tractor rifle, and the results are spectacular. It works way better (for me) than all logic would suggest.

Depends I think on the firearm but if you can see through the peep you're at least in the park. I can't see my front sight personally so it's pretty much real glass optics of some kind for me.

Yes it would help. The trouble with open sights is that your eye has to focus on 3 things at once which is impossible, they eye just can't. The rear peep/ghost riing blurs and you eye naturally places the post in the center. Obscures less of the target, generally more accurate and with practice is just as fast. Unscrewing the insert from the peep to make it a ghost ring would speed things up and offer a great FOV at the cost of a small amount of accuracy. Try both ways.

I'm in the same boat as you. And yes it very much does help. The rifles I've shot that are equipped with smaller target style peeps showed me that I'm actually not a bad shot at all when not hamstrung by my "old guy eyeballs" in their natural form. In fact with a smaller aperature target peep it clears the view nicely almost like wearing prescription glasses.

Adding tang or receiver peep sights is a nice way to go if you really don't want to fit a scope. Note though that a small aperature target peep will cut down on the available light as well. So if you are trying to use them in some dark woods you may find that you can't see what you want through the peep sight even though it was quite clear to the naked eye.

I am slowly adding aperture sights to all my working rifles. Some are factory and some are built specifically for the rifle.

I have the same problem, bad eyes out to about 2 feet then it clears up. Peep sights work extremely well and are very accurate as well, I have no problem shooting moa at 100 yards with them.

Another vote from 60 year old eyes with trifocals. PEEPS YES on most of my rifles and one on a revolver just for kicks. It works great on the 22lr revolver for quick shots on bunnies.

At 54, I can still use notched sights on my handguns, but for rifles it's either peep sights or scopes, open rear sights just don't work for me anymore. :scrutiny:

Not to criticize someones choice but got to ask why with such great optics now why open or peep:confused: I've been shooting 60 years used scopes for 40 of those would not consider using a rifle today without some type of optic.

He asked about iron sights because he wants a truck gun. In my experience a scope on a knock-about gun is a deficit, not an asset.
Having said that, I too have only scoped rifles now and keep each in a hard scabbard in my truck, 4-wheeler or snowmachine (snowmobile to you folks in the lower 48).

54 year old - progressive lenses that are so old the prescription has been changed twice since I got them......I put a set of Brno match peep sights on my CZ452 Ultra Lux.....it was like having perfect vision. Extremely accurate - I love shooting that gun with those sights. Open sights?? fagettaboutit..

Don't get me wrong. I too have rifles that wear glass. Sometimes you just need glasses even on your rifles. But peeps work good also.

I thought it was Snow Go"s here in Alaska....

A peep sight will increase your depth of focus.

My dad make a tiny peep with his thumb and two pointer fingers to read a menu when he forgets his cheaters.

I love peep sights, almost every gun I own wears them, and those that don't either shoot bird shot, or don't get used all that often.

"Cheaters" for old tired eyes (chronological gifted eyesight)

Home made from clip-on sunglasses. (hole in aperture increases depth of field and sharpens vision)

Wingman, I gave up optics quite a few years ago when I gave up small bore rifles. On my 45-70s and 50-70s a scope does not look right and on the Trapdoors they don't even mount properly.

Another reason I prefer apertures is the weight or lack of it when compared to optics. A set of aperture sights on my Winchester 1895 did not effect the balance whereas if I had mounted a scope it would have been very awkward.

My 58 year old eyes can use the peep sight on my 68 year old '03A3 to shoot 1" groups at 50 yards. I need a scope because?
Peeps are much easier to use and more accurate than open sights for just about any shooter. All modern combat weapons have peeps (the AK is a bit "pre-modern" being 65 years old).
