Simple question.....I think I'm sure of the answer but here goes. Does the foam in a Pelican case have to be cut or can it hold wide firearms without damage ie. would the uncut foam be too tight on gun/optics? I want to use the 1750 for several guns but cutting the foam will make it gun specific.

you shouldnt have a problem.....foam relative to the metal is VERY soft.... assuming you can close the case with reasonable force, you wont harm the gun or optics.

a little tight is better than not tight enough.

I wouldn't recommend it in the rifle cases, at least not in the two models I have. I haven't tried it in any of their pistol sized cases. If you look at this picture, even with the rifle inlaid into the lower foam, the scope turret leaves a visible indentation set into in the upper foam. If none of the rifle were inlaid, you'd get the whole rifle leaving pemanent impressions in both the upper and lower foam and possibly enough pressure to damage the case or the rifle.

You could buy extra foam sets and each set could be used to cut impressions of two different rifles, then you'd only have to swap the lower half of the foam for each rifle. The upper half could stay the original uncut piece. Hopefully that made sense.

I would have thought that, too, but the foam in both Pelican cases I have is much more dense than what you find in the typical cheap manufacturer-included cases, or $30 sporting goods store cases. It does not compress as easily. They may offer different densities in different product lines, though.

Higher end cases like the Pelican use closed cell foam which should be cut out around the silhouette of the gun. Cheap cases use open cell foam which compresses easier and does not need to be cut. Open cell foam also holds moisture throughout the material just like a kitchen sponge. Closed cell foam only holds moisture on the cut areas so moisture doesn't travel all through the material.

This is why I asked. Thanks guys. I guess while its on order I will find other foams so I can swap it out.

For those of you who do not know, Pelican actually has many 'Pre-cut' foam pieces that are not only specific to their different case models, but also to a decent number of 'popular' gun types, i.e. MkIII's, 1911's, cowboy revolvers, Glocks, ad nauseum........

^^^^^Thats good to know. My case will mainly be used for a Savage 110FP with a Choate Ultimate Sniper stock and Nikon scope. I have not yet shot it cause I don't have a case that fits it :(.

Also, their headquarters is right down the road from me. Even cooler? Our daughter's latest Boi-Toi has a brother with a business right next door to them. He gets.....free stuff from them. Y'all should see my new #1750. Thing's built like a Sherman tank......:D

Pelican also sells foam inserts with pre-cut grids. Just pluck out the pieces to fit your firearms into. The fit won't be perfect, but good enough.

First thing is that Pelican uses open cell foam, or they did a couple years ago.

Also check to see if a 1750 will fit in your vehicle, if you own a car it might be difficult.

As for fitting around the foam, just take the center section of foam out and get yourself some smaller peices to fit around whatever guns you have in it at the time.

Finally..... The Pelican case is ridiculously heavy and overbuilt for bringing guns to and from the range. I never use it as it's easier to just put a few rifles in soft cases or more compact/lighter hard shell cases.

I had heard that storing guns where they're surrounded by foam can tend to promote rust formation. Is that inaccurate? I've never found any on my guns, but then again, after hearing that, I went out right away and bought a dehumidifier for the inside of my safe. Not trying to hijack this thread, just figured I'd ask since it's somewhat on-topic.

Trucks only here so no problemo.

........Thats why I want it.....This case is for a fairly expensive precision rifle. Dont want it to accidentally fall in a soft case.

I think this is true. My stepdad let me borrow his Remington 870 that he stores in a soft case. When I removed it from the case it had several spots of rust on the barrel and reciever. I put silica packs in all my cases when trasporting guns and bows. I also have homemade silica gel holders in my gun safe made from pellet tins with small holes cut in the lid. The only thing in my house that is stored in foam lined hard cases are my compound and recurve bows. They also have several silica packets in them. I have never had a rust or humidity problem. Hope that helps ya out.
