Pells?

When did pells become pellets? I was reading some vintage Crosman ads. They mention pellguns and pells "ammo" for said guns. It didn't dawn on me until now pellgun oil follows a similar nomenclature. Is pellets a modern term or is pells something Crosman specific. Curious about it. Interesting to say the least.

I think it used to be the name of one of their products. I seem to recall seeing "Super Pells" for sale at one point.
