Pending/possible gun legislation

^^^ This.
How anyone could take a look at what's been happening in the past few months (even if you only get your "news" off of Don Lemon's prostate gland), and then with the afterburners engaged since the afternoon of January 20, and say, "We just have to wait until the panic passes and the scalpers stop buying up all the ammo, just like the times before." just makes me think all the more that the opposition has pushed it over the top this time. 1st Amendment is toast. 2nd to follow. I'd LOVE to turn out to be wrong, but who the heck does anyone think is going to stop them???
I have to think 50,000,000+ people matter. If there is any traction gained, I think it will be short term.

Storm the ballot box.

The anti-gun cult thinks they've taken the Seelowe Heights and it's nothing but open roads ahead of them.

There will be no "compromise". They seek our utter submission, if not outright destruction.

Somebody is going to win totally and somebody is going to lose totally.

Come on guys/gals, Don't get this shut down.

And a plea: Please don't get my thread closed by bringing politics into this. This is strictly a question about policy and possible (and likely) upcoming legislation.

Gents, the doom and gloom is a bit premature. For a number of reasons, gun rights are not in the dire straights that some think they are right now. Certainly we need to be cautious and not let our guard down (that supposing we can even do anything), but I have a list of reasons why I don’t think MAJOR gun restrictions are imminent...

1. Trump, Obama, Bush, and Bill Clinton all took office to have at least one house of the legislature of their party (most of the time both). They all lost at least one house of Congress during a midterm. That’s VERY likely again this upcoming midterm. I don’t think Democrats are going to risk unpopular legislation like gun control that would make an almost certainty a sure certainty.

2. This election was supposed to be a blue tidal wave but looked more like the wake from a small John boat. Democrats lost seats in the house and picked up 2 in the senate, despite having to defend only half the number of seats that republicans did. The gun control party didn’t do as well as they had planned.

3. The senate is very evenly divided, and even still we have the filibuster. Chuck Schumer would be a fool to burn all his political capital on abolishing the filibuster on something like gun control... which may wouldn’t pass by simple majority in the senate anyway. Further, I don’t think the party in power has the firepower to abolish the filibuster. It may be threatened, but I doubt it’s realistic. There are moderate Democrat senators who are somewhat pro-2A (or more likely know their re-election is impossible if seen voting for gun restrictions).

4. Honestly, there are a lot of progressive issues that are much more popular and legislation is more likely or would be easier to pass. The American public is coming around to a minimum wage increase (it is needed, but not to $15.00 an hour IMO), everyone is still fixated on COVID, and healthcare is always very near the top of the list with the democratic platform.

5. Mitch McConnell is a skilled politician and a shrewd man. Ronald Reagan he isn’t, but he has been the senate majority/minority leader the pro-gun caucus has needed for some time now. I’m sure he has some tricks up his sleeve.

6. Democrat gun owners. Yes they exist. In greater numbers than we think. Many of them probably don’t own an AR15, but they also wouldn’t be ok with a total semi-auto ban. Which would pigeon hole wording on any potential AWB legislation into something more like that of 1994 (that did almost nothing). We don’t need to paint all of our fellow Americans that vote Democrat as gun hating communists, because all of them aren’t.

7. SCOTUS, in its current makeup, likely wouldn’t stand for any major federal gun restrictions more than what already exist. SCOTUS makeup being “packed” or tampered with would likely ensure Democrats would never have control of the senate for the next 50 years.

We can’t let our guard down, but I believe major federal legislation restricting gun rights significantly is a non-starter right now.

My one big worry is a further erosion of gun rights in the individual states. And some scheme of regulating or abolishing internet sales of firearms or accessories. I fear restrictions on internet sales of firearms accessories could be added on to another bill and squeak through. And that would hurt us badly. That’s the most likely legislation with severe impacts to us that I see possible.

I am aware of this Administrations published plans regarding guns and I am a bit of a pessimist, so that's as much as I will comment.

I see absolutely no basis for any optimism.

Any sort of "process" issues are of utterly no concern to the anti-gun cult. They care no more for the rules of the Senate or any sort of "collegiality" than a screaming mob of Red Guards. ANYONE who gets in their way is going to get swept aside... or run over. NOBODY on their "side" stands to gain a thing from opposing them. Apart from the obvious fact that they have the same ultimate objective, they live in justified fear of the mob turning on THEM. It's FAR more likely that gun owners will be stabbed in the back by our "friends" in some Munich style deal.

We will see "salami slicing" tactics, just a little bit at a time. More work is needed at the state level as once reliable red states turn purple thanks to blue staters moving in and turning them into what they left behind-Vermont, e.g.

"Pending/possible gun legislation" is political. You can't bring politics into the discussion, it is already there.

Step 1: Pack the Supreme Court with ideologically reliable justices, so that whatever else we do sticks.
Step 2: Make DC and Puerto Rico states to further cement our majority in perpetuity.
Step 3: Do whatever the hell we want. The deplorable half of the country will just suck it up if they know whats good for them....or else.

All of this will happen soon. Before that there will be a bunch of executive orders on gun control, possibly today.
This is what was promised, it was not a secret. You can find the videos on YouTube or read Biden's "Vision for America"

Ok, let’s wait for actual actions to come forward. We actually have a nice thread that lists such bills. Closed
