I have an 1849 ASM with a 5" barrel (might actually be a 6 haven't measured,) guy I bought it from said #11 caps but some seem to fit ok on the nipples and some slide right off. I haven't shot it yet and I've heard of people "pinching" caps, but do they mean ON the nipples or before putting on the nipples? I mean, as far as I can tell pinching before wouldn't be uniform and I don't see how it would do much, and on the nipple there isn't enough room to pinch to sort of 'crimp' on it. I'm pretty new to black powder stuff. But I don't want caps sliding off, especially since (and yes I know it's kind of goofy) I'd like to carry it on me. Would love to find a CC holster that would fit it. Was also wondering since with the short-barrel versions people seem to say the .31 cap and ball revolvers are about same ballistics as a snub-nosed .22LR, what about with a 5" barrel? I'd imagine being a bigger bullet it'd still have more stopping power regardless.

You need to pinch the caps prior to putting them on the nipples, and push on with a small wood dowel, but those will not be the best fit. You need to find caps that fit your nipples or buy replacement nipples from Track Of The Wolf that fit those caps. If you pinch, when you fire the gun, you need to turn the gun 90* to the right before re-cocking the gun in order to eject the spent cap upon re-cocking. The spent cap should fall from the pistol and not jam the mechanism.

Those Pocket pistols were always too small for my hand, and I wish you good luck in your endeavors.

I still think there is no substitution for proper nipples and caps. Just try it and if it doesn't work, just chalk it up to experience.

From what's been posted here, cap keepers can be made out of standard aquarium tubing purchased from Walmart or a pet shop.

I also have an unfired ASM .31 but it's a Wells Fargo model with a 4 inch barrel.
This one has a date code of BD = 1994.
What's the 2 letter date code on yours?

there's a brass framed wells fargo one on GB I kinda want but seems overpriced (the gb listing is $225 and it's used) guy I bought my 1849 from said it was made in 1969, I paid like $120

First, your probably gonna want Remington #10 caps for pretty much any ASM if you can get em... If not, go ahead and try the #10 CCIs if you can get them.. Just understand, they are cheaper because.. well.. they ARE cheaper. You would do well to listen to the advice here about turning ya gun before cocking it... This goes DOUBLE so when using CCIs. I wouldnt use em as a CC or an EDC at all, as has been mentioned, if #11 is all you can get (and it does seem that ANY #10s are about as common as hens teeth in local stores these days) then, again, as has been stated youd be better off looking into replacement nipples that wil actually fit what you have access to. You can order whatever ya need online, BUT youll pay a hazmet fee for it (usually around $20).

Now.. that being said... Just some friendly advice from someone who DOES EDC one of these weapons quite a bit (and I have had a LOT of side wise glances because of it LoL!) Im not sure that youre barking up the right tree.

First, you admit that youre not very experienced with our old C&B wheelguns... And thats OK! Everybody has to start somewhere bro! NONE of us where experts the first time we picked one up, ya know? BUT.. You said ya wanted to CC this thing.. NOT to EDC it, but CC. Concealed carry denotes that you are carrying solely for Personal Protection. As in, you may find yourself facing another human being. Being a beginner, Cap and Ball revolers are simply NOT the way to go for that if you have ANY better option.

Some people DONT have any better option, and I can sure as hell respect that... But if ya DO have ANY better option, THAT is the option I would recommended.. I spent a LOT of time learning these sidearms and can tell you first hand that C&B every day carry is not for the novice.

Im also a HUGE proponent of 777.. Dont care WHAT ya gonna carry for a real world working gun, its pretty much GOTTA have 777 or 209 if its gonna be called upon for life saving measures (and there are are a BUNCH ceviots that go along with 209!).

THAT being said though.. You are STILL attempting to concealed carry a .31. I dont care if you are powering it with a small nuclear reactor, nothing in the WORLD is going to change the fact that its a .31! When it comes to personal protection, or protection of loved ones, you are simply NEVER going to get it from a .31 C&B. Yes, "back in the day" people carried them all the time... There was a REASON for that, but it wasnt because of stopping power... It was because of bread mold LoL!

Why did so many people carry them back in the day? It wasnt because YOU could ever have sopped me with one.. It was because ~I~ may have stopped me if you pulled one. There WHERE no antibiotics back in those days. If you shot me in the guts with one of those I knew damn well I was gonna die and I was gonna die a HORRIBLE death to boot. Thing is.. if I was a bad guy, I would have done it a WEEK or so.. At least a few days.. AFTER chopping you and your family apart with that ax. I would have died from the INFECTION. Today we HAVE good medicine... Criminals dont die a week later from infection, and they KNOW it. Todays we need STOPPING power for CC. It is no longer a matter of "scaring" they simply ARNT afraid because they KNOW chances are good they will survive a handgun, live a few months at the tax payer expense, and move on with the NEXT victim. Today it doesnt MATTER if he may or not die.. what matters is that he doesnt take ONE MORE STEP towards you or your family.

I live WAY out man.. and Im a hell of a lot more likely to run across rabid or feral dogs, garden robbing rabbits or pissed off copperheads then I ever am the odd meth head or moma bear... BUT, I pack a .44 because the odd meth head and moma bear DO exist.

When it comes to CC and Personal Protection, especially with a C&B, the key is to go BIG or go HOME... Usually in a body bag.

Just the personal opinion of a nut bar who actually DOES carry these things.. YMMV...

Out of curiosity, what C&B do you carry? I have a Pietta 1860 Army .44 cal. snubby that looks tempting.

The one with the thunderer grips? LoL.. Thats the one I carry most. I also sometimes carry my 5.5" Pietta Remmi as an open carry...

In full disclosure mode, I DO also carry more modern stuff from time to time as well, such as the S&W 642, but thats is mostly just when Im dressing too light for concealing the 1860 snubby or open carry isnt really appropriate.

Honestly, for MY situation (and Im only speaking for MY situation here, not recommending to others) the snubby in BP and along with its conversion is pretty much the perfect sidearm... Though, that MIGHT change if I ever "bulldog" a remington... For right now, the snubby is pretty much my sidearm of choice. Again though, I dont live in New York or LA and what I do out here I would never do in other places.

Either way, I doubt Id carry a .31 unless it was the only gun that I had or could get... The BEST you can really hope for would be power on par with a single action .22LR... And of course if its not loaded just right or something goes wrong, the power level can only go down from there. Again though, thats just me and my opinion, your situation could be totally different then mine..

Enjoy your 1849 Pocket for what it is. A piece of history that you can shoot.

Get a modern cartridge firearm for CCW. If price is an issue - look to Ruger for their pocket 9mm's and 380's. LC9 or LCP. The LCP can be had for right around $200, sometimes less. Reliability is what I want out of a defensive firearm.

Here's someone firing a CVA - Armi San Marco .31 Pocket brasser with precision at about 12 feet that's loaded with 12 grains of powder.
He begins firing after 1:20 in the video:
