How good is the NRA's Personal Protection in the Home course? What can I expect out of this course? Is it worth the time(8 hours) and cost? I'm debating whether to take this course or some other course to meet my CCW permit requirement.

I think it's actually on the order of 10 hours... How good the course is for you depends on your willingness to learn, and to some extent, your ability to safely and accurately fire a pistol. Among the topics covered are cover & concealment, mindset, levels of alertness, aspects of making your home less of a target, legal aspects of self defense, flash sight picture, point shooting, shooting from behind cover, and much more... If you're an experienced shooter, are safe and accurate, you could fit right in this one, but if you're a newbie, then I'd suggest Basic Pistol 1st...

I am certified to teach Personal Protection in the Home.

That class is a great class, and replaced regular Personal Protection.

Regular Personal Protection is basically Basic Pistol with one additional chapter thrown on it about awareness.

Personal Protection in the Home has several shooting drills in it including tap and rack drills, the Tueller Drills, etc. etc. etc.

I don't get to teach Personal Protection In the Home to my CCW students because our state legislature, in its infinite wisdom specified NRA Personal Protection by name in our law.

In fact, the NRA no longer makes regular Personal Protection textbooks, but it warehouses millions of copies for the three states which specified the old course by name in their laws.

Personal Protection in the Home is a much better course than the old Personal Protection.

I wish I could use it.

"I've been on a waiting list for over two years for Personal Protection within and out of the home."

What do you mean by that statement? Are you on a waiting list to be a student in the class or are you an NRA Instructor trying to get certfied to teach the class?

Either way, the Personal Protection OUTSIDE the Home course has not been released by the NRA yet. When I talked to the training department a few months ago they said they hoped to have it out sometime next year.

PPITH is a good class, but I have high hopes that the new class will be better suited for CCW students.

I mean that when I completed Basic Pistol to get my CCP (Actually got my CCP for a few months before I bought a pistol!) I signed up right then for PPITH and PPOFTH. Their still trying to get all the legalities straightened out, in addition to finding a gun friendly lawyer to come in and talk to the class about the legal side of PPITH.

Hrm. The instructor who is (at least up to a month or so ago when I bumped into him), teaching the pistol stuff goes by the name Charles Rumsey. Don't see his name!

Instructors dont have to use that page, although they certainly should because it's the only national contact point for finding nra classes. It could be that your guy is still out working and doing classes, if so and if you talk to him encourage him to log into that web page and get some free publicity. I just sent a good humoredly teasing message to a national email list of nra instructors chiding folks in Maine for only having 3 classes listed. Hopefully some of the old codgers who are sitting on their credentials will get up off the couch and go teach some classes ; ) Boyd Kneeland
