I'm looking for an alternative to DEET containing products to keep these pesky skeeters at bay. I'm open to all comments as this is a really bad year for fl.

After another thread started earlier in the month, I picked up a Thermacell. Worked like a charm. My father in law has a ranch with a TON of mosquitos and I let him borrow it to see how it works out there...

Thermacell is one of the few "electronic" devices that is not on the "pack nazi" (me) boundary waters trip verboten electronics checklist.

we like to keep it "primitive" up there, as much as we can. it's about getting away from things, not dragging them along with you. But the thermacell works, and to boot it's physically less volume than packing along a bunch of chemical cans.

Garlic heavy diet.

Works wonders for me. The attendant olive oil that usually gets liberally used with it doesn't seem to hurt either.

load up on some raw garlic the nite before...not only will people keep their distance but bugs as well !! plus you get a extra shot of energy..........

whats the odds on that happing !! two posts on garlic --dam near the same time...he must have posted his as i was writing mine............

Here is something I posted a while ago:
I've worked up north a lot in Canada and the mosquitoes are real bad. The only thing that really worked was DEET. Just don't spray it on yourself, that stuff melts plastic. At least flagging tape anyways. I found that spraying it on my shoulders and ballcap worked well. On bad days I would put a bandana under my ballcap foreign legion style and spray it also. As for clothes skeeters have a hard time going through that cotton/poly material that they use in workpants and shirts. I use to wear those standard blue workshop cotton/poly coveralls, they worked real good but you got to spray the spots that they can get in. Nylon windpants and jackets work well also.
I was once working geology up north and a coworker found out the most incredible thing. One time at the end of the day he was waiting for the helicopter and he covered himself with the bright orange helicopter flag to try to catch some shuteye. The skeeters would go under the flag and freak out and try to get out. No bites. I tried it and it really worked.
One treeplanter I worked with did the garlic thing. I don't know if it worked against the skeeters but it sure did against other people, he smelled real bad.

Nylon windpants and jacket work really well. So does the bandana under ballcap thing, tho it works better with DEET. Thing is DEET is the best, you just gotta keep the stuff off of you.
Good luck.
I hate skeeters.

DEET is minor league compared to a Thermacell. I use DEET while walking to my stand but after the Thermacell warms up and puts out the vapor, the bugs are non-existent.

I stopped hunting during bow and Spring turkey seasons until I discovered the Thermacell.

Years ago, I found an effective combination of bug dissuaders.
Choose fairly thick clothes and spray them sparingly with mild repellent.
Let them dry until there's very little objectionable odor.
Spray exposed body parts with Listerine mouthwash.
Take a very strong B vitamin complex.
This weird sounding combination does repel bugs, including mosquitoes, very well.
And it's not particularly nasty to you or those around you.

Electronic? It's got a piezo-electric lighter, but it's not electronic, doesn't take batteries. It's as primitive as fire.....and a chemical soaked pad. :D You Daniel Boones do what ya want, my old butt ain't leavin' my Thermacell when i head for the blind. :D

+100,000 on the thermocell! It also works very well as a personal heater, without the pad, in extreme cold. I put it in the collar of my jacket so it has enough air to burn, Keeps your torso warm and will warm your hands as well! GOOD HUNTING!

The heavy garlic keeps them away from me too. Eating bananas or avocados seem to attract them.
