IMR3031 is looking good for both, but so are 4198 and 4064. Dang it why can't they sell sampler amounts of powder?
I use those Berry's in 30-40 krag and 30-30. I like them.

1lb of powder goes fast so don't worry too much about picking the right one on your first go round.

IMR3031 or H322 will give good results in both rifles with jacketed bullets.
Either Unique or #2400 for cast bullets for light loads.
I also like H4895 in both for full power loads.
However, a full power load of H4895 (full case!) under a 400gr bullet from a Marlin 1895 will loosen you teeth fillings!

I cast so I mostly use cast bullets in both cartridges.
My favorite in the .30/30 is the Lee 150gr FNGC (158gr) over 28.0gr H4895. (Sized .311" lubed with SPG). Gets 2,100fps. Accurate. Uses same sight settings as factory jacketed ammo.

For the .45/70, two bullets.
300gr RCBS FNGC (322gr) over 29.5gr #2400. Mild, accurate, economical. Gets 1,650fps from 18.5" M1895GuideGun, 1,750fps from 22" M1895 "Remlin". Powerful enough for any .45/70 use.
400-405gr (have both FN and HBFN Lee molds). Over 21.5gr of #2400, gets 1,300fps, duplicates factory load. Very accurate.
I also use a lot of H4198 in .45/70.

BTW, a 1lb container IS considered a sampler. IRRC about 20yrs ago, one of the powder manufacturers offered a 4-powder "sampler", 4-4oz containers in a 1lb package. Waxed paper container similar to 1/2pt milk box. I think it was Hercules; Bullseye or Unique, #2400, RL7 and RL12. A lot of dealers split them up, marked them up too! Evidently didn't go over too well.
