petition for M14 rifles

You do realize that petitions on the internet carry as much weight as the "boycotts" that come around on THR now and then where a handful of people decide they're not going to buy a product, but they're too lazy to let the company know why. You don't get it both ways; our Republic is not "Point and Click." If this is something you truly believe in, print it off, pound pavement, knock on doors, and ask for actual signatures with addresses next to them. Write your state and federal congress critters. But don't throw a link to a petition with no teeth on a gun web site and feel like you've done your good deed for 2A today.

DUH

Who says I haven't? I posted it here because its idea for activism, not an end in and of itself. Besides sending a letter is a waste of time, it gets read and thrown in the trash, I prefer to call. Living in a relatively small state my voice carries louder than say someone in CA.

Two issues,
Clinton Melted a ton of M14s in the 90s, I don't think there's that many left compared to the huge surpluses and lend-lease inventories of Garands, Carbines, etc.

The M14 would have to be sold off as parts kits and re-assembled using new receivers since ATF's "once a machine gun, always a machine gun" law would disallow the selling of M14s.

The Clinton destruction and giveaway of M14's has pretty much depleted the inventories.

This one is a few years late I'm afraid.

The military has been digging through scrap receivers trying to put serviceable rifles together for the sandbox as it is.

A petition to charge Clinton with treason might be more useful.

He's right. The m14's have been going back into service in Afghanistan/Iraq because they needed it to fill more of a "designated marksman" role. I don't get why so many were melted... why not just stockpile.

M14's

According to Orest Michaels of the CMP, there are no surplus M14's . The M14's in government inventory are for active use. He even went so far to say a couple of years ago, that IF the once a machinegun always a machinegun law was changed, and IF there were surplus M14's that they would be sold at auction if turned over to the CMP and in his opinion they would be in the 25K+ range each starting with rack grade and going up from there.

But he was clear in saying there were currently none in inventory declared surplus, not even anymore LEO guns that were released in the mid 1990's.

If anything, we should petition for M16 rifles. We have so damn many of them that we're giving them away! (to everyone but civilians). Seriously, the government could sell them for 4-500 each after modifying the receiver for S/A only, and we'd make more profit than we do when we just hand them out to nations that will likely not be friendly in the future.

The ATF's opinion on "once a machinegun always a machinegun" is irrelevant if the gov't decides to hand out modded M16s.

Because Clinton was part of the "we know what is better for you" anti "assault weapon" crowd in power. The same people banning semi auto weapons with the federal AWB.

The military had moved on to the AR platform for quite some time, and he just decided so many evil weapons sitting safely in an armory were a major threat. They could one day be given to civilians through CMP like ex military rifles previously had been for generations!
A true danger!
So rather than leaving the option (risk!!) of that ever happening during future administrations he decided to destroy the weapons.

The military of course now realizes it could use a lot of those rifles. That in some roles they are far more useful than the M4 or M16.
Unfortunately Clinton in all his "wisdom" has limited thier options.

Military armories costing almost nothing across the nation were raided, with excess weapons destroyed.
The sole purpose was to insure American civilians would never have those weapons transfered to them, whether in semi auto or otherwise.

This happened with not just M14s, but even many 1911 pistols and other stockpiled service weapons.

I don't get why so many were melted... why not just stockpile

For this very reason. This crowd feared exactly what we are talking about here, the future sale of this stuff to civilians.

That's one way to fix the problem, make them disappear.

Like I said, a petition for treason I'd sign.
