This week's Outrage comes to us from the City of Brotherly Love and its Mayor, Michael Nutter (D).

Nutter is a member of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's gun control advocacy group, misnamed Mayors Against Illegal Guns. We recently reported on Bloomberg's announcement that he had hired a driver to tour the country in a large truck, towing a billboard claiming (wrongly) that 34 people are murdered with guns each day.

Implying that there is a single solution to the entire problem of criminal gun use, the billboard refers onlookers to Bloomberg's www.fixgunchecks.org website, which urges that federal law "require a background check for every gun sale in America."

As Nutter was waiting for the "Bloomberg Express" to pull into town last week, he said that in his city, it is easier for children "to get a gun than to go buy a book." Seriously?

Since it is illegal for a child to buy a gun from a dealer, we have to assume Nutter is referring to the chances of a child illegally purchasing a firearm from the black market on the streets of his fair city. This is a sad commentary on the city's apparent failure to enforce existing laws.

To buy a black market gun, the child would first have to find a seller in a dangerous street environment, and would have to come up with enough cash for an item much more expensive than the average paperback. Not exactly a safe, prudent, legal, or easy prospect.

Compare that to a child walking into a bookstore and plunking down $9.95 for a book.

Making ludicrous statements, and trying to ride the coattails of Bloomberg for his own political gain earns Mayor Nutter this week's "Outrage."

Philadelphia is corrupt as any other large metropolitan city. That is, very corrupt. I have nothing but contempt for those in charge of things.

Note that I work in the city itself.

Frankly, I wish his statement were true. I'd much rather have a child get a hold of a firearm, than get a hold of certain books out there. Thoughts and ideas are far more dangerous in the long run than a simple tool. It is a child's rearing, his moral compass and his sense of responsibility, which safeguards his well-being, not availability of inanimate objects.

Just what we need book banning. i guess we only like certain parts of the Bill of Rights. Censuring what your child reads, listens to or watches will not keep them safe from drugs, sex and rock and roll.

Va herder

Well said sir.

I can sympathize with these mayors that, after elected to office, preside over a city that has more or less constant crime, much of it gun crime. Naturally they look for some way they believe they can help. In the political arena, that tends to be "advocacy". But it is still misguided. If I were him, seems more effect would be garnered by leaning on the PD and the DA, to enforce laws more strictly against perpetrators of gun crime.

And it's easier for a fat guy to get a cheesesteak than either. More Americans die annual from heart disease, hypertension, cholesterol and other obesity related problems than gunshot wounds. Why not ban his city's famous greasy sandwich instead?

Kilpatrick was kicked out of office in Detroit; Daly finally quit in Chicago, Herenton resigned in Memphis and hopefully alot of these other idiots will follow them soon.

Good point. Maybe the police should be shooting the philly subs out of my hands?

I thought we could call all these politicians on there crap...? Where are the big law suites on slander, lies about facts? If a politician makes an official statement, should it not be backed up immediately with strong non biased facts? And if it's all made up crap, what do we do, a hand waive and say "oh we caught you, now stop that..." Free speech can and should only go so far in a situation like this...

If you stop and think about it, putting the wrong book in the hands of a child is far more dangerous than a gun!

Are you sure Mayor Nutcase isn't the re-incarnation of Mayor Daley?? :D

They were just in Iowa City, Iowa which is a liberal city home to the University of Iowa. Our mayor in Davenport has his name on the list to make all private sales go thru a federal Check.

That's dumb but not the dumbest thing Philly does. Philly insists on passing their own gun legislation even though it's crystal clear that new gun laws can only come through the state capitol. This is generally how it works.

1. Philly makes up it's own law
2. Philly tries to prosecute someone with that law
3. Philly is told they can't prosecute because the law was never legal
4. Philly is successfully sued by whomever they tried that nonsense on
5. lather, rinse, repeat.

sigh
