City seeks public votes on next Point of Pride

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Pride Commission is asking the public to vote for a favorite city Point of Pride.

A list of 10 finalists was recently selected from more than 70 sites nominated by the public last fall.

To be included, the place had to be a landmark or attraction unique to Phoenix that induces a sense of pride in the community.

Residents have until March 12 to vote via postcard mailed to City of Phoenix PIO (MC), 200 W. Washington St., 12th Floor, Phoenix, AZ 85003.

The 10 finalists are the Arizona Falls, Arizona Science Center, Bank One Ballpark, Ben Avery Shooting Facility, Burton Barr Central Library, Eastlake Park, Japanese Friendship Garden, Murphy Bridle Path, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and Thomas J. Pappas School.

Information: (602) 452-6259.

I know what I will vote for!!
:)

I'm glad the range made this list. Although I would vote for it if I still lived in AZ, I will never be able to call it anything but the Black Canyon Gun Range. Ben Avery..............blah.

My home away from home.

Years ago, there used to be a little convenient store and gas station just up the road by I-17.......named Bisquit Flat.

We would stop there and grab a good cold beer after a day of 110+ shooting and watch the young bikini clad ladies fill up their boy friends' and husbands' trucks after a day of boating at Lake Pleasant.

Well, Bisquit Flat is gone and so are the beautiful girls but Ben Avery goes on.

I remember Bisquit Flat. The cold drinks. The biknis, and the vast nothingness that used to be Carefree Hiway.
I remember the one lane dirt road out into NOWHERE.
It's now all Phoenix.
I hope your right about the range continuing on.
I look forward to shooting there when I get back. I miss that place.
I starting shooting there sometime before 1970.
Wasn't nuthin out there then.

J Miller, you wouldn't recognize the I-17 Carefree junction anymore.

Northeast of the junction are houses as far as the eye can see with a big Albertson's there now, a McDonald's, a Four Son's convenient store and it goes on and on.

There are houses on both the east and west side of I-17 north of Pinnacle Peak and it's slowly creaping northward.

Anthem is a HUGE housing community just south of New River.

All areas I use to hunt dove and quail.

Now, Phoenix and Peoria own so far north the only permitted hunting is north of New River.

Ben Avery is the last of the original and untouched areas as I remember them.

But, for the past 1 1/2 years there's been constant debate as to the future of Ben Avery with the encroaching developments and the developers greed to grab up land just so someone can call the person in the house five feet away 'neighbor.'
