This is a photo taken about 26 inches from the muzzle. It is a .395 dia ball
going about 1000 fps. Swiss powder was used. This was taken by my good
friend Larry Plecher of Indiana. Larry takes lots of high speed pictures of Flint
Locks and such.

Thanks Phil, great pic. But it surprised me that at 26 inches the patch is still in the picture. I figured it would have fell away by then.

I'm surprised there's that much fire since I'd guess the powder charge is low if a .40 cal ball is only traveling around 1000 fps.

I usually find my patches about 5-10 yds in front of my bench. But I'm also using 70 grns of 3F...

It took me a few seconds to figure out the pillow ticking was in flight with the ball. Otherwise it looked like the unfinished Death Star.

That's right, what am I thinking. 26 inches is only a little over 2 feet. I knew I shouldn't have gotten out of bed today.

I want to see what a wad does from a pistol.

That patch looks perfectly centered behind the ball too.

Mr. Plecher obviously knows what he is doing with a camera.

Is there anywhere we can go to see more of his work?

Thanks for posting this neat photo.

I posted the link above. On the "Wad". Sometimes it just flies away and sometimes it sticks to the ball and will go thru the paper target at 25 yds.
Sometimes in the fall when the grass is dry, it will set fires. This has happened
at our range. I was there and seen it.

Very cool picture! I saw many of his experiments with the locks on flintlocks. Well worth looking into.:)

Here a photo of my ROA with a 4" barrel.

I have tried to think what happens to the patch and your picture is what I thought would happen. For absolute precision the cutting of the patch may be important....will try it at the range tomorrow.
