Photos from long-range shooting in the field last weekend

Is it wrong that this makes me want to live out in the desert? Thanks for the pics.
Not at all. I wish the same thing.

Great looking shots Zak. How far were you shooting?

Furthest target we shot out on the field course was probably 750 ish.

On the KD range there was a 1350 and a mile, but it's never possible to see hits/misses on the mile target.

For those that don't know, this is the "Blue Steel Ranch", the site of the Steel Safari. We were shooting for fun and also scouting for new shoot positions for this year's match.

Damn that looks like fun. I don't even have a gun that would shoot that far...but I'd love to go just to hang out and watch you guys shoot

Awesome. Gets me excited for the sporting rifle match in may.

I still don't like living in deserts though

The desert is a great place to shoot. Love the dust puffs from the hits down range, the clear air, the vistas, etc. :)

Just don't try it in July - the mirage will make your scope a lot less useful :(

I'll take a guess at the chamberings. I bet lots of 6.5's, a few 6's, and a few more 7's. 6.5's and 6's are probably short action non-magnums, and the 7's are probably magnums of some sort. 6.5s are probably shooting 123-140 grain bullets at around 2800-2900 fps, 6's are probably shooting +100 grain bullets are 3000 fps, and 7's are shooting 162-180 grains at 2800-3000 fps.

At least this has been the case for the few ukd matches I have been to. It's all about bc, speed, and more importantly consistency.

Some of it could be gleaned from prior postings, or the 2006-2010 Steel Safari match reports. But I'll run down what the guys in the photos were shooting. Since this was just training/practice/fun and not competition, some of them were using their secondary LR rifles for whatever reason.

I shot my AI-AW in .260 Remington. S&B 3-12x50 PMII, TBAC 30P-1 suppressor. 26" Rock Creek barrel. Load is a 139gr Scenar over enough RL17 for 2875 ish fps out of my now 5 year old barrel. This is the exact same setup I used to win the SS match in 2006 and "open" in 2007 (other than the newer suppressor). This barrel is almost toast, but it still shoots great "most of the time". But I'm losing 25 fps every couple hundred rounds.

The guy in the first photo was shooting a Lawton action and barrel in a Tac Mod stock, with a Leupold on top. Cartridge was .300 WSM shooting 168gr Speers at like 3080. His suppressor was the YHM, which was notably louder than my can.

The guy in the fourth photo has what is basically a Remington, chambered in .260. I don't know the exact model of stock. Nightforce on top. Load is probably 142s at 2850 ish.

The guy with the camo stock and the grey TBAC shirt has a Surgeon .260 Ackley with a USO on top. TBAC 30P-1. Load is 142's at probably 2940.

The last guy (spotting for the Surgeon shooter), I don't have a photo of him posted, he's shooting a Remington in .308 with a Nightforce on top. 175's at 2700 fps.

In the past, I've shot my .308 (even with surplus ammo to boot) on the course for practice or "shoot in" (prior to the match).

In the SS match reports from 2008 on, I have equipment surveys that include cartridge used.

If you like what you saw here, the "Similar Threads" box below the reply box should have a list of five other threads I started in the past several years with similar stuff, shooting, rifles, locations, etc.

Very nice...not too many have the space to shoot that far. I am hoping to do some longer range shooting in two weeks.

I always like seeing your pictures...the pictures look very professional and what can you say it's an AI.

I was just about to ask the same thing. I thought it looked funny that only the can was covered and the rest of the rifle left alone.
