Hey Zak - How exactly do you guys determine hits at a mile? Do you use really good glass or can you actually hear the impact on the steel?

I don't have any experience with such distances. Actually, as of yet i don't really have any experience past the 50 yard line... :(

Impacts are usually visible on freshly-painted steel with optics. After a few hits accumulate, you can usually see the splash as the bullet hits-- at least for large bullets!

Audible is possible, but you need a relatively thin yet hard plate (ie, armor) suspended in a way that it will ring. And, again, big bullets help.

Any work for electricians out your way? I stayed in Mancos for my honeymoon. MI job market is dismal to say the least.

Zak,

i searched the net, and while they do have a web page in the works, it is not up yet. so no info on the co$t of their wares.

these kids are the same ones who make bullets for chey-tac's .408 cartridge, so i'm guessing it would be THE kind of inherently acurate projectile. i have read that they make a 300gr .338 solid that gets an amazing high 8's, or low 9's in the BC department, don't recall for sure.

my bad on the "going subsonic @ 1500", like i said im a newbee to the 338. still haven't even finished dialing in the night force 5x22 on mine yet due to unreal hours they have us doing at work now. some how i seemed to recall reading that was where it happened. i have checked same against an extended ballistic chart that terry @ black-hills was kind enough to send me for their 300gr SMK loading and it reads 1365fps @ 1,500. [sweet shooting ammo from them]

sorry on not being clear in original question, was asking about heat mirage off of the [hot] ground, not the bbl or suppressor.

gunnie

will be watching the link you sent in expectation that all of the overdose we're working will be through by june.

I said they kind of disappeared because they used to have a full web site a few years ago, and it is now gone. If anyone still has a phone number the confusion might be able to be cleared up with a phone call.

Zak, I've recently noticed some new buzz on the 260 Remington. What's your take on it? It looks like the kind of thing I'd like to shoot.

Here it is; however, it was written before I got a chance to test both 6.5x47 Lapua and 6.5 Creedmoor. All three are very similar with slight tradeoffs each way.
