Last week I picked up my new Dan Wesson Pointman 7 1911 .45.
I am not a 1911 expert but I was very impressed with this pistol. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but fit and finish was very good. I shopped for some time and comparing it to others 1911's I had handled I was not disappointed. The slide is very tight and smooth but needed some use to smooth it out a bit more. There were no blemishes or other cosmetic problems.
It came with 2 Novak mags, with pads on the bottom. See the second pic. I did not really want the pads on the bottom from a looks only purpose, but at this stage it does not matter and at the end of the day I don't really care that much about looks.
Price was $850 cash plus tax and background check. I don't know if that is a good deal, I could have saved $70 by going through Buds as they have them for less, but I like to buy local. They had to order it in.
Here are the pictures. I tried to provide as many as I could to give others a better idea as to the PM7's set up and features and what you get. Hope it is not too many. Pic are good, but not great. I don't have much time so I just had to shoot them and crop them. No light box, extra lights, or tripod.
Before I went to the range I field stripped it and cleaned it and lubed it with Microlon. I don't know much about Microlon, but the shop owner said to try it so I did. Seems like good stuff. Was slippery and stayed where you put it, which about all I can ask for. Everything looked good during cleaning. The mags drop free. There is zero play in the slide and just the slightest amount in the barrel at the muzzle end.
At the Range, I was not disappointed. I expected a few problems, but it ran great. I only brought 50 rounds of Magtec blue box ammo (the Brazilian company) of FMJ. I will test/try more ammo later. This a range gun for me, so I am just looking for few accurate types of ammo to run.
No FTF, FTE, or any issues. Slide locked back, except when my fat fingers were on the slide release. The recoil was very managable. The BEST part is the trigger is IMO great. That was a big reason I bought the gun as it is advertised with a 4 lbs trigger. It was crisp, a slight amount of soft take up, and then it seemed to me just right. It has an overtravel screw, but it was set from the factory just right.
I did not bench rest it as I was just trying to break it in. Both my Dad and I were getting touching/overlapping 5 shot groups at 21 feet and 30 feet shooting two hand off hand, and neither of us are great shots. All 5 shots were touching in many groups. The gun is not the weak link and I think it will break in to be very accurate. Even after 50 rounds the trigger was getting better. It was sighted in dead on from the factory, but the black sights against black bulls were hard to see so we switched to orange targets.
That is all I can think of. I am very happy so far although it is too soon to make a final judgement. Thanks for everyone help and advice. Oh, also, I can see why people get hooked on the 1911. It was a pleasure to shoot.
