All,

I have been trolling trying to figure out how I am going to set up my 870 for HD. I have been toying with different configurations and yes, I ultimately admit to trying to build a weapon that is both superfunctional and aestheticly pleasing. I am super comfortable with the AR platform so a pistol grip and collapsible stock like the SST870 is on the way.

Here is the question. I would like to have a picatinny rail up front to increase my ability to mount flip down AR sights. I have come across several items that are designed to be mounted to mag extensions but the question is, can they be flipped over to be mounted to the barrel and as such provide a top picatinny rail.

SO, would this work.

or this?

Thanks for any help.

I suppose it would, but at HD distances, are you sure you want something that might interfere with your ability to quickly acquire the target and possibly hinder your pointing the gun at it?

I doubt it will work, because the stock adaptor for putting an AR stock on a shotgun gives the stock a pronounced drop at heel like a normal shotgun stock must have to align your eye down the barrel.
The same stock on an AR is exactly straight back from the bore line, with no drop at all.

Putting High AR sights on a gun with that much stock drop will find your head wobbling around on top of your skinny neck, trying to get your eyes high enough to see through the tall sights.

I hear you,,,,but you can and should point shoot from any HD range. I contradict myself as WHY would I need any sights at all??

Also, I would like to at somepoint put a Burris red dot on it. Good for both HD fast acquisition and for 'aiming' at various distances.

With the red-dots and holosights.

Be sure and ask the bad guys/home invaders to stand down while you get everything powered up and brightness adjusted.

After that, they are indeed very fast sights!

For room-distance HD guns, it's just very hard to beat a good front bead.
They are always "ON".

I'm willing to go as far as ghost rings for add-on sights, but the only thing battery powered I want on a shotgun is a white light source. And I still think a conventional stock is best as well. But that's just me- your gun, your $$$, your gunfight. Once you get it all bolted on, take it to a 3-day shotgun class and see how it all works together and how it holds up.

Functional = KISS, for most things.

A shotgun used for dynamic targets, as opposed to static targets, are pointed, not aimed. The more crap you add, the more you upset the balance and usefulness and the more you make it harder to fully utilize.....YMMV
