I have expanded my inventory of handguns suitable for CCW over the last couple of years. I must list CCW guns on my permit, and am limited to three, so today's game is Pick Three....

Glock 30, 26, 36, 21
Ruger LC9
S&W 38 Airweight snubbie
Colt 1911 Govt stainless

I'm XXL-sized (6'3, 275) so a tiny gun is not needed for concealment. I'm leaning toward an all-Glock setup (30,26,36) for a single manual of arms. Am I missing something?

wow, you have a Conceal Carry permit in CA??? Am wrong to believe that is a rarity?

Depends on the county. Mine issues a lot.

What do you shoot best (quickest accurately)?

The 26, by far. 10 shots in a 6" circle at 10 yards in right at 6 seconds. Truly amazing little pistol. Since 10-round mags are the norm in CA, I don't see a need for a 19 or 17.

The 30 is as accurate, but about 9 seconds. Very fun gun to shoot, and much better accuracy than expected. Currently my primary CCW.

The snubbie slows down for shot #6, and isn't as accurate. It's also not as much fun to shoot, so it doesn't get shot as much.

The 36 just arrived at the dealer, and I won't get to take possession until Jan 5th (dang one handgun per 30 days CA rule!). I suspect it will be more accurate and faster than the snubbie, and make bigger holes - but I won't finalize the list until I've shot it.

The 21 (and my 34) are best at the range, but not enough better to warrant carrying full-sized 10-shot Glocks. They both have 3.5 connectors, which (to me) is a negative in a carry gun.

The LC9 is very accurate, but the trigger pull is long and slows me down. It's also the thinnest, so it conceals best, but it's almost painful to shoot - so it doesn't get nearly the amount of practice as the Glocks.

The 1911 is a sentimental favorite (I've shot 1911s for 30+ years) and very accurate, but frankly I prefer the G30 to carry. I never thought THAT would happen...

Well here is a big, medium, small selection.

My 625-3 .45 ACP/.45 Super 3 inch snub, 66-3 Combat Magnum 2 1/2 inch snub, and my first CCW carry gun when CHL started here in Texas., a 640 2 inch S&W snub in .38 Spl.

I too have that 3 gun permit limit. Really wish it was 4.

G26, carry most of the time.
Colt Series 80, for winter and those cool days.
Single Six, like to carry my plinker and small game hunter in my vehicles.

Why would I want a 19?

The bigger grip is easier to grip with bigger hands than the 26, without (for most) being too big to conceal.

The 26 shoots nearly as well as my 34. Even if a 19 would match my 34 (highly unlikely), the difference in accuracy at SD range is very small. I'm a bit faster with the 26, and the 26 will fit better more places than the 19. Regardless of model, I don't get to have hi-cap mags, so 10+1 is the limit - no advantage there. If I had difficulty shooting the 26 well, a 16 might help - but I don't. My pinkie folds under the butt and rests against the mag base, and my ring and middle fingers hold the grip very securely.
If I was going to carry a 19, I'd add an eighth-inch of thickness and have ten rounds of 45 instead of ten rounds of 9mm.

You asked why you'd want one. in your case, it's the only reason you would.

If you shoot the 26 well, then there's really no need for one.

And you'd still have 10 rounds of 9mm, the 19 is 9mm as well.

First off, I'm sorry your State feels it necessary to make you choose only 3 handguns for carry and then forces you to list them on your permit. I'm wondering what part of "Shall Not Infringe" they don't understand.

Of the guns on your list I would put the Glock 21 and 30 on the permit because of the common caliber and magazines and since I'm a revolver guy I would add the S&W 38 Airweight too.

Depends on what gun you own now, that should fill a slot. I wouldn't carry a Glock, but I suppose I might put at least one on my list. I would include a very small gun too. A little .380 or 38 special, a pocket gun, so to speak. When it comes to CCW I like smaller guns, at least as an option.

Consider, like me, you might not always want to carry heavy firepower under a shirt.

I , personally, would put "1911" down on the form. An appropriate gun in lots of sizes. I'd probably try and put "Glock" down too, instead of. Glock 19 (again, though, it wouldn't be my preference). I would certainly put my Walther PPK down. It's a fav of mine. A 442 would have to be on my list too. You run out of room fast on that form.

I would not put a big bore revolver on my list. I had always wanted to carry one, until I actually tried. I like to carry a model 66 in .357 magnum. I have one with a 2 inch barrel that just rocks for CCW, that be about as big as I would go, with the limit of 3 guns.

Even with only three on the list, you'll probably wrestle with which one to carry for a bit.

You need a really good holster, and a really good belt, so make sure you have all that you need for the primary carry gun.

1) Glock 26
2) Glock 30
3) Glock 36

Since you don't do well with the Ruger LC9 and the lightweight S&W J frame, go with the Glocks that you do your best shooting with.

Given what you've said in the thread, I'd suggest
Glock 26
Glock 30
1911

That would give you the best use of what you have, I'd think.

BTW, I had a California CCW for 15 years and was not limited to three guns. I varied between five and six guns listed on my permit.

There's lots of myths and FUD about California CCW permits. There's no state mandated limit. Some counties have limits, some don't. I didn't live in Kern county, but you may want to confirm that.

I'll have to ask - the Standardized CCW Application from the State only has space for three, as does the actual permit. It's been a while since I had more than three guns I wanted on my permit - got my first permit 32 years ago.
