Man arrested after police standoff

Deputies say he was armed and wouldn't allow a roommate to leave.

Deputies have arrested an apparently distraught man armed with a knife and broken stick who held a roommate hostage before surrendering to authorities.

No one was injured. Peter Rixon, 48, was taken to Marion County jail on charges of kidnapping, menacing and harassment, sheriff's deputies said.

The incident began Monday evening when another resident of the house at 188 Elma Ave. SE told his mother that Rixon had a knife and was making unusual statements, deputies said.

Deputies went to the home, which is run by Northwest Human Services' Homeless Outreach and Advocacy Project, about 8:30 p.m. to check on Rixon.

From the outside, they were unable to contact Rixon. However, a short time later another man jumped out of a front bedroom window. That man, another roommate, told deputies Rixon had the knife and stick and would not let him leave.

Only Rixon remained inside the home, but he would not respond to attempts by deputies or specially trained negotiators to talk with him. A tactical team was able to get a portable phone into the home, and a short time later Rixon came out and was arrested.

It's amazing how many people I either know, or become acquainted with, will live with anyone/thing (always temperary...) to save a buck. I suggest they leave, but they never do until "something happens".

I almost had this exact same situation happen to me when one of my idiot roomates threw away my ONE DAY OLD left-over frozen pizza. Its a good thing i couldnt find an adequatly sharp stick.

Many many years ago when in college my best friend opted for a roomate. At first the guy seemed allright until one night when he began sputing Nazi racial theory. A few days later he never came back (leaving all his property) and the the Secret Service came calling. Apparently the guy was big on passing counterfeit currency and counterfeit money orders.

So John thought the next roomate would work out better. And for awhile he did until John went home for Christams break. When he returned his roomate and moved out and John's tv, vcr and microwave oven had gone with him. Me, I'm married and Idaho is a community property state.

I'm glad my 200 square foot studio is mine, all mine. Not only that, but anyone that enters there in without a repair order or my previous consent is assumed to be an intruder...
