You stole it at that price. It is just really satisfying to find an older gun with a period correct scope and in superb condition.
Finding one that's already done and done well is always nice. I almost always get tripped up trying to get the right period optic, turning my good deal into an expensive rabbit hole. But it's still fun.You stole it at that price. It is just really satisfying to find an older gun with a period correct scope and in superb condition.
The bottom one had a receiver sight on it at some point. I had a Mountie with a Williams receiver sight that shot "lights out" with decent ammo. It actually beat several bolt actions at the range...but that was when I had "younger" eyes.Completely agree. I still find it peculiar that 99% of the 39s i see that are d&t'd, are in exactly the same place. These 2 are 30 yrs apart.View attachment 1107614
It's definitely a modification, whether it's added on or just twisted over. The Weaver bases are also an add on. Some purists would cringe, but I wouldn't mind at all. At least it's not wearing a 1" 12-48x85 on a picatinny rail.
Getting some gunsmiths to drill and tap an (old lever gun ) for a scope mount base can sometimes be a chore . I had an idea to do a one ring mount for a pistol scope. My gunsmith philibustered for 30 minutes telling me it was never going to work. Finally I guess he decided that I was crazy, but my money was green He grudgingly agreed and a week later I was able to mount a long eye relief pistol scope on my rifle.
This combo has become my favorite squirrel getter. Despite his insistence that it would not be stable enough to stay zeroed it has remained on zero for going three years. ( only re- zeroed for each new 500 ct. brick)
