The Shadow Knows...
Hey all, just picked up a nice Smith 19-4 today but there is something different about it. It has a wide serrated trigger and a very large hammer spur. (both N frame size) It also has what looks like an over-travel knub behind the trigger on the frame. I was wondering if it was a "Combat Magnum" but the CMs on Gunbroker have standard triggers and standard wide spurs.

Anybody have experience with this?

Thanks!

It is certainly a target set up (such tight groups too, yep, its a keeper) I just dont remember ever seeing them marketed as a target model... would the box have said target or combat mag?

have never seen a trigger and hammer this big on a k frame either... and i have seen lots!

its like this one but mine has no orange front sight insert

My 19-3 that I bought used many moons ago came with both target hammer and target trigger, both very wide. They had been installed by the cop who originally purchased the gun new.

K-Frame S&W's could be bought with the 3 T's as an option . Those guns also typically have the red ramp front and white outline rear sights.

3 T's = Target Hammer, Target Trigger, Target Grips

The "T's" where optional on the K frame 19 and 66's. Often refereed to a model with all 3 as 3T's that is Target Trigger, Target Hammer, Target Sights.

would this still be called a combat magnum?
All Model 19 revolvers are called Combat Magnums no matter what options are installed. That was the name of the pre-M19 before S&W started using model numbers in 1957.

My 19-4 is set up the same way. Very nice gun. For serious work some prefer the more narrow trigger, but for a range toy I like the target trigger.

I just bought a .400 serrated trigger to put in my 586 range toy.

I think what you are referring to is a trigger stop. Back in the 70s there was some problem with these loosening and preventing full trigger travel. Most people removed these from guns used for SD purposes at the time.

That is a trigger stop for the single action function that you describe, and it is removable. It is a holdover from My Daddy's day when Bullseye shooters actually used revolvers.

There were four triggers that were offered with the K and L frame revolvers. A narrow serrated, a.400 wide smooth, and .400 serrated ,and the even wider serrated target, which is what is pictured in the link. The .400 smooth was offered after a lot of ppc and distinguished shooters bought the .400 serrated and ground and polished them smooth.

There were also three hammers available as well, the standard narrow hammer, the wide hammer (pictured in add) and the wide target, (even wider than the one pictured)

From what I see in the gun posted in the gunbroker link, the Hammer is a standard wide, was pretty much what came on most 2 1/2" and 4" 19's and other K's late 70's on. However it does not match, or is it the same style as the Wide Serrated trigger that is installed in the pictured gun.

Indicates to me that the trigger was swapped out, and more than likely the original hammer remained.

The hammer and triggers from both K and L frame revolvers were interchangeable.

Older K's and those made as basic police or military service guns, the M-10, fixed sight, the M-13 in .357, and the M-58 in 41 mag all USUALLY shipped with the narrow triggers and hammers. The Adjustable sight Models, the 15's, 19,and 57 shipped with the wider hammers and triggers. There were some target models, one the 25-5 comes to mind, as well as the M-57,and the 29's shipped with the really wide hammers and triggers.

A lot of the K',L, and most all N's with barrels 6" and over shipped with the really wide "Target" hammers and triggers.

We used to swap them out to fit the individual shooter all the time. Most of the time it was a pretty straight drop in that required very little fitting or stoning to get it dialed in right. . still have a few of them laying around somewhere..

It would nether ad or detract from the value of the gun.. I hope this doesn't confuse.

My 19-4 4" has the same set up, target trigger hammer, sights. I paid 300 over 1 yr ago. There is no holster wear on the gun. It is the best shooting most lovely looking gun in my arsenal. I have shot reloaded WC's in 38 sp and they just go "poof" and hit the bull every time. When I want to have a good day at the range I take that gun with me. I always follow my session with the 44 mag 4" shooting that gun as it makes me feel that I"m not that bad a shot. I have an old post that has pics. Good luck.
