1992...

I had recently turned 21 and was looking for my first compact handgun to carry concealed...something that would be a lot easier to hide than my only other handgun, a Taurus PT92 (I carried the 92 in a Galco SOB holster...I had no idea what I was doing).

The Colt Officer's Model was my dream CCW, but with a bank mailroom worker's salary, that wasn't going to happen. I stumbled upon a well-used Star PD at an LGS and decided it would fill the role.

I carried the PD for about 2 years before I traded it for a 6906 (I was a rookie officer carrying a 5946 and figured it'd be advantageous to carry magazine compatible guns (Again, I was clueless and thought it mattered. Or maybe I was looking for an excuse to buy another gun).

Ever since, I thought about the PD every now and them and how much I loved that little gun. I'd casually kept an eye out when I visited gun shops...saw a couple over the years, but in pretty junky shape. I missed a few on GB recently that looked in decent condition, but either got outbid or I forgot about the auction and came back just after it ended. I made a trip upstate to visit a couple of gun stores and happened into a pawn shop close by to one. Browsing the case, my eye caught what I thought was a familiar profile and as I snapped my gaze back I said, "Oh...it was a Star BM."...but then a saw a tag showing "Star PD .45ACP" and nestled next to the BM was a pristine Star PD marked at $499. I handled it for a few, looking it over...amazed at the condition. Some slight haggling got me out the door at 10% off.

Included was the original box and accoutrements (paperwork is in perfect condition). The bluing is near flawless, with just two spots, top of the slide release and on the thumb safety, showing the typical "bronze" color that these seem to turn (I've seen some PD's with frames that are almost completely "bronze" color from the bluing/anodizing fading). There is zero wear in the typical spots (muzzle, grips, backstrap, etc.) and the lack of wear on the magwell suggests the magazine hasn't been removed/inserted very often.

Glad I missed those others on GB now. :)

Nice PD. Just make sure to inspect and replace the buffer on a regular basis. The pistol will beat itself to death and crack the aluminum frame if the buffer is worn out or missing.

This one looks brand new. I doubt I'll wind up putting 50 rounds/year through this one, but will probably pick up a few extra buffers anyway just to have.

Holy cow, OP -- I cannot believe you found a PD in this condition. I am a long-time fan of Star pistols, and the PD is my all-time favorite.

Freakin' awesome find. (And the only pistol that actually benefits from the "Shok-Buffs."}

Great score! I'd carry it, and shoot it. One of the all-time underrated pistols of the last century. And it's in America's caliber...

Congrats, yours is in better condition than my coworker's was in 1980. It was rough and only a couple of years old. I stupidly took my gun cleaning supplies to work (Security guard) and I ended up cleaning everyone's guns that day. Including my bosses' RG 38, which he should have been ashamed to carry. I shot it once, and it was fully functional, but what junk.

And in much better condition than my original PD...it was in "work horse" condition. Back then, I took a trip to the beach...I live in North-Central Alabama, the gulf coast is about a 3.5 hour trip...I put the PD in its belt slide holster in the door pocket of my truck. By the time I got to my hotel and pulled the PD out to carry it to my room, the entire slide and rear sight assembly was covered in rust...I've never seen a gun react that way (and that fast) to salty air. When I got back I had to drop it off with a 'Smith and have it stripped and reblued.

I do like the Star pistols and own two Firestar pistols. I have the M43 9mm and M40 40 S&W. The Firestar is real close to the PD but with a steel frame. I wouldn't mind having the 45 ACP Firestar M45 and the PD for my collection. I used to carry the M40 and M43 quite a bit but they are heavy for their size.

The .45 Firestar is another that I'd like to add to the collection someday. One of the shops I stopped in yesterday had two Firestar 9mm's and a Firestar Plus in the case.

With all of the like-new Stars I saw yesterday at a couple of shops, there must have been a recently-deceased Star collector in the Hunstville, AL area. :)

The Firestars are nice pistols.
You guys are making me miss my 9mm and .40 S&W Firestars. I liked the "Starvel" nickel finish; my only complaint about the Firestars was that the safety levers were a tad mushy, didn't really give you that positive click on or off. The weight was a bit of an issue, but really, the size of the Firestars was great, their ergonomics was great, accuracy was there, the triggers were really pretty good...Yeah, I was kinda stupid to trade them off.

Nice find!

I have a business associate who can afford to buy any gun he wants. He carries an old Star and swears it is the best gun he has ever owned. He got married about 5-6 years back and I trained his new wife in defensive shooting. He bought her a Star to keep at her business. He's a bigger fanboy of Star than I am of Sig P220 series, and that's saying something.

Glad you were able to find a part of your past!

Nice find! Now I'm searching the big online auction sites for one...

That, and a nice Star BM would make a nice pair. Size-wise, how does the PD compare to a Commander or an Officers?

Unfortunately, I don't have either to compare...never owned an Officer's model and got rid of my Commander-sized Kimber long ago.

I'll try and get some pics of it with a few of my current compact guns to give an idea of size (365XL, Max 9, etc.).

Very, very nice! I have a Star BM, one of my favorite sidearms. I just checked, mine has the X1 mark and a"78" upper right side of trigger guard towards the front.

I liked my Star PD more than I liked the OACP that replaced it...it was just hard to find good holsters for it and I stupidly sold it; but I did get a H&K P9s for it.

This PD is in great sharp. I'd also recommend getting extra buffers for it (just in case). I added Pachmyr grip panels to mine when I carried it (Milt Sparks SS), to save the unfinished wood panels
