Here is the final result of my unissued unfired Yugo SKS I got from SOG.

The rifle came packed in cosmoline and was a disgusting mess.

I had to soak the entire rifle minus stock in paint thinner to get al the cosmoline out. Since the rifle is basically in new condition the metal was in pretty much perfect shape.

After that was the cleaning of the stock. I used 409 and a towel and iron to get out all the dirt and cosmoline. I sanded the stock down to 220 grit for a smooth finish.

I then stained the stock with Sedona Red Minwax. I used Tru-Oil for the finish. I think the end product turned out very nice.

Below are pics of the finished product.

Pretty!

Does the stock bleed cosmoline around the gas system when you shoot it?
Mine was obviously unfired when I got it (not as pretty as yours) but the cosmoline was soaked into the wood pretty deep.

Pretty Yugo...

Stchman--Nice job on the refinish! That is one PRETTY Yugo SKS!

Now, the next question: How's she shoot??

Thought I no longer have the two I had, I still belive the SKS is an under-appreciated rifle. Rugged, reliable and more than accurate enough for what they were designed for, I'm sure they served well when in service of countries that chose to adopt the design.

Thanks for posting, I heard these were available from SOG and I was curious what kind of shape they were in. Looks very nice!

I have yet to shoot it.

The ones from SOG look beautiful besides all the cosmoline all over it.

I used 409 and a hot iron with a towel to draw the cosmoline out of the wood. I feel I got all the cosmoline out.

I will post some info as soon as I shoot it.

The M 59 66 is my most accurate SKS, with Yugo FMJ ammo it grouped 2 inches at 100 yds on sandbag rest.

My old Yugo SKS (made in the 60s) is a real nice shooter. The metal looks really good, but the stock needs some work. Since this one turned out so good, I am going to finish up the other one.
