Now soaking in Remoil
I got my sks apart no problem, except the trigger takedown was sticky and needed a little oomph (hey, it was still stuck together with cosmoline) and tried out the steamer technique.
Too slow.
I tried out the brake cleaner. Now, my hands feel a little irritated But the parts seem pretty clean. I then wiped stuff down, got out some hidden gobs, and then soaked everything in remoil (I recall seeing on the Remington site recommending soaking their police 870's, which are packed in cosmoline, in Remoil, letting it sit overnight, and then wiping away the problem.)
I think the steamer will work on the stock. For now all the parts are soaking in the remoil on newspaper on the garage floor. Tomorrow night comes the steamer for the stock!
After wiping things down tomorrow, should I try a simple green/water bath to really make sure everything is clean, and then relube with remoil or CLP, or am I probably ok unless I see cosmoline anywhere? I also picked up acetone and mineral spirits.
The firing pin rattles in the bolt, but first I will attempt to get the pin out myself and try to replace it with that murray spring pin. Or I'll mail it out.
This is fun...
