Good evening (or whatever it is when you read this).
I am looking to get into shooting black powder this year, I invision hunting with a Dragoon : ) since at 34 I finally took my Hunter Safety Course why not start with a bang. That irrelevancey over with I would like to buy a .31 caliber Pietta 1863 Remington Pocket revolver and cant find a steel frame in stock with all this lunacy going on in America, there is one brass frame on gunbroker but its not suggested to use the conversion cylinderson them. Can you swap out frames between the two or is there a difference in the other parts?. Anyone know where one is in stock or for sale that will ship to Alabama of the top of your head? Also anyone cast any conical projectiles for them if so whats the mold you use and load data?
Thanks in advance,
James Ivy

Swap out frames? How does that work? No, the revolver in question is a diminutive near palm size .31 caliber 5 shot. Remington made some with brass frame and then iron or steel. Repros are made of both so basically both are historically accurate.

Usually brass frame revolvers are softer than steel and in the 36 or 44 caliber versions, it is advised to load them light so the frame does not become stretched. There are examples of brassers actually getting stretched.

The 31 Remmie is a sort of "little brother" to the bigger 36/44 guns, basically the only major difference is the spur trigger.

I don't know if cartridge replacement cylinders are available but I would NOT use them in the brass .31 1863 Remington.
These are all made in Italy, and Europe is still hurting from The Andromeda Strain------oooops, I mean covid19. Pietta makes these and they may have shut down totally or partially, or if open, catching up on backorder of guns more in demand. Unfortunatly this is going to take time, like months... to catch up or get going and back to normal.

Yea like I stated I definitely don't want the brass frame for the conversion cylinder, but to be fair I could shoot handloaded cowboy/gallery loads in 32 short out of a brass frame that wouldn't hurt it at all but just lose the ability to use off the shelf factory loadings
