I have a Uberti 1860 with a nice fluted cylinder, and I can't help thinking it would be nice to have one of those snub barrels available to pop on. However, it seems that VTI sells a 3" for $125, but it's for Pietta's Army model. I checked with a couple of local gunsmiths, and to shorten my existing barrel, it would cost $100-125 anyhow, so being able to just buy a new snub barrel and leave my pretty, blue 8 inches alone seems to be a better deal.

Does anyone know if a barrel meant for a Pietta will fit a Uberti?

I have fit Pietta to Uberti and viceversa but it is a lot more work then I would do again. If it were me, I'd spend the $125 for another complete 1860 and use a hacksaw to shorten the barrel. Most of the shortened ones, of the period, were done roughly. Not many can be documented that short from the factory.

If I were to saw my own barrel, I would then just need to bring it to a smith for recrowning, correct?

The muzzle may need to be faced off to true it up and make it perpendicular to the bore.
Some folks can recrown a barrel on their own, but going to a gunsmith is probably a good idea.

It seems like Dixie only sells a replacement barrel made by Pietta. This would lead me to believe that a pietta snub barrel bought from VTI should fit my Uberti. Come to think of it, I never even thought to contact VTI about this. Perhaps that would be best before I chop anything.

VTI Sells an 1860 Uberti replacement barrel that only needs to be cut down.

StrawHat provided the detailed answer to the OP. Which ever barrel Dixie decides to sell isn't contingent on whether it can be made to fit Uberti guns or not. What's clear is that VTI sells the Uberti barrel that's designed to fit the Uberti 1860 while the Pietta barrel is not.

Maybe, then, I'll get my current barrel cut down, and get a new Uberti barrel from VTI. Hopefully one with a more secure loading lever catch than that of the current barrel.

I put a Pietta barrel, cylinder and frame onan Uberti Thunderer grip and grip frame for this one...not quite the same thing, but I just had to brag. I call it my ''Pooberti''!

Thank you BHP, for again making me almost weep at the beauty of a snub nose. It's actually your pieces that made me want to get a snub barrel.

Cut with a hacksaw (maybe a Sawzall), trued with a file, no crowning done. Front sight left large to file down at the range. Since adjusted for a 25 yard zero.
