Been shooting BP revolvers for a year and make my own felt wads for them...but I'm getting a traditions Pennsylvania tomorrow and plan on doing some shooting with the patches that I ordered with the rifle but wanted to know if I could run down to the local fabric store and use their pillow ticking the same as a 'real' patch? I mean, buying the stuff for $12/yard is alot cheaper than $6/hundred for patches...about a penny/per vs. 6c/per.

I seem to recall something about melting fabric material on some materials. I know many who will only use cotton material.

$12 a yard!!!???

Check out your local Walmart - if they have a sewing section (many do), you should be able to buy 100% cotton ticking, drill, and muslin - all suitable for patches) in various thicknesses for $5 per yard, or less.

As has been said... Only 100% cotton. Wash it a couple of times to get the sizing out. I toss mine in the dryer. I iron it flat and cut long strips about 1 3/8" or so wide. Roll the strips up and toss them into my bag. I cut square patches, lube and center them over the muzzle. Start the ball and you are on your way... Don't forget the powder.

Thanks a million! You guys saved me lots of money which is one reason I like the BP thing...

Doubledeuce: Got lots of powder here

I, too, take a micrometer to Jo-Ann Fabrics. (Strange looks don't bother me.) ;) Haven't bought commercial shooting or cleaning patches for many years. Look for the 100% cotton fabric on sale. A couple of yards will give you a LOT of patches.

I have a linen bedsheet [California King size] I have been cutting pathes out of for about twenty years. I'm down to about a two foot square now.

I admit to going to Jo-Ann's fabrics with a micrometer. I got a yard of pure cotton cloth for $6 (And some odd looks). :D
Yeah I can relate to that :p When I go to the store to buy a bunch of the 'toy caps',sometimes I get some looks.I love it.Thats a good one with the micrometer at the fabric store :D

I have taken a dial caliper into the fabric store, too. I have a really great story about patch shopping with Dad, but there's just no way i could tell it here. It'd be a great story for the campfire, though.....

anyhow, bear in mind that once you wash the ticking, it will swell some. I buy mine at .013-.015 or so and it tends to fluff up to .015-.018. I cut it into strips and either lube the strips, or just tie them to the strap of my possibles bag when I'm spit patching.
