Not having an engineering background, I've never properly understood the purpose of the different types of punches available and their uses.

What should I be using to remove the trigger housing pins and steel buffer pin on my Ruger 10/22?

What about the trigger housing pins on my CZ 452?

What is the purpose of brass pin punches? Are they for use with brass, alloy or polyutherane pins only, or can they be used on steel?

I'd appreciate some help on this?

Standard steel pin-punches are used on solid steel pins.
Starter punches are just shorter pin-punches, or tapered punches that don't bend as easily when first starting a stubborn pin out.
Cup-head punches are used with round or dome-head pins to prevent marking them.
Brass & Nylon punches are used on items you don't want to put dints in, like drifting sights, etc.
Roll-Pin punches are used on, you guessed it, Roll-Pins.

What should you use?
Use the punch size & type that most closely matches the pin dia & type you want to drive out.

The whole idea is to move the pin without causing damage to the pin or hole with the punch.

From memory, a proper roll pin punch will have a small 'teat' in the center.
