There is a new guy on another forum who is thinking about buying this Pioneer Arms 1860 .44 fluted cylinder pistol but is new to BP C&B. I have no interest in buying it but I have a few questions.

(If you click on the pictures a couple of times the view will enlarge.)

I have never heard of this importer. The pistol right barrel lug is stamped Model 1860 Army OAL . 44 - WIKE - .The "WIKE" appears to be hand stamped as opposed to the other characters. It has Italian proof marks on the barrel lug and the frame and a date code [AA] (1975).

I am not a member of the forum shown below, but the last few posts have some fair information.

If I can help this guy figure out what he is looking at, I need the forum members here with your expertise to help him out, and if you can do it, I am going to print the replies out so as to put in my book of replica info.

I might be looking for a needle in a haystack, but heh! It is all about information, right?

Thanks in advance,

Jim

Back then there was so many importers that you would need an encyclopedia to keep track of them all. I've never heard of them.

Jim the post you linked to on the castboolits forum is from 2015. Is there some other guy who wants to buy it? I doubt the guy on the castboolits forum is still thinking of buying it.

Went to the the first link, Simpsonltd, the 1860 Army shown is a nice looking piece, from what I read it would have to be transferred through a FFl dealer.
They also have numerous ROA's listed. High prices, most German re-imports. It seems if one were to buy one it would have to be transferred through a FFL dealer also.
I'll have to book mark that site, it has a wide listing of firearms.

Thanks to the OP for the link.

Sorry if I was not clear in my post, sirs.

Thanks, LP, but the guy that is interested in the Simpson LTD pistol is not the same guy on castboolits. I only posted the castboolits link because it was the only reference to Pioneer Arms pistols that I could find, and I am not registered on that site. Sorry for any confusion.

Crawdad1, I thoroughly agree. I looked through Dr. Jim L. Davis' site and could find no mention, unless I missed something. http://rprca.tripod.com/

EK, you always come through with good info. Thank you! I think the French guys, with the very strict regulations upon ownership of firearms in France, have really done much research into the repro subject. Ringo on this forum is in Brittany and is a good source for info, and he speaks, reads, and writes in perfectly fluent English. Very good for folks like me who have no clue about the French language.

Thanks to all for the replies! Some things to print out and add to my repro "encyclopedia".

I purposely posted this only on THR as this seems to be the watering hole for the "bestest" of the best (excluding me!). Kudos to all!

whughett - I have purchased from Simpson's before.

They are great folks to talk with before your purchase and they ship quickly.

They even threw in a pen with a flash light in the top (with the company contact information conveniently stamped on the barrel of course.)

But.... they are in Illinois which has stricter gun laws than most states and so EVERYTHING that goes bang must go through an FFL.

I've visited Simpson's in person when I lived in Illinois. If you ever get a chance that is the store to see in person. Tons and tons of C&R long guns lined up in racks up and down the isles of the store.
Not sure how they sell C&B to out of staters. They may have to ship to a FFL. Weird C&B laws in Illinois. I do know they will sell to C&R holders.

Crawdad1 speaks the truth. If you are trying to figure out who Pioneer Arms is you have your work cut out for you. With a name as generic as "Pioneer Arms" there are likely several candidates. Back in the '70's every Mom & Pop gun shop and hardware store had the opportunity to buy those C&B revolvers by the crate and have any name they wanted marked on them. It was the golden age for those repro's and everyone seemed to be getting in on the fun.

Those were the good old days, weren't they Blue??? :)

Forty years ago I had 2 black powder stores that catered only to black powder guns and equipment, Antique Rifle Works and the other name escapes me right now, within easy driving distance of me back then. Both are long gone now.
