I currently own a CZ PCR and a CZ P-01. Both are 9mm. I’m a big Fan of CZ’s.

The P-01 mostly stays in the safe. I do intended to equip it with a light some day and use it as my nightstand piece.
The PCR is my CCW piece and goes with me everywhere. Both have been reliable pistols.

My wife is a RN and has an offer to work for a home health company. She has expressed interest in getting a CCW permit considering she would be driving all over the county. We were considering some options and she’s leaning towards something that’s a subcompact for her purse or one of those daytimer looking cases.

In order to do this I’m going to have to sell one of the guns or both.
So here are my questions\options I’d like some feedback on:

1) Is it a really bad time to get into .40S&W? I only have about 300 rounds of 9mm on hand. Enough for her to shoot a bunch of times and use for her CCW test. So I need to get more handgun ammo anyways.

2) If I sold the CZ’s, I leaning towards Glock as an option. Either a pair of G19/G26 or G23/G27. I let her take the subcompact. I like the reliability factor with the Glock. I figure if it's good enough for LEO then good enough for my wife.

3) Is Taurus a bad option? I like the PT24/7 and I’m very interested in the new PT840. Are the small Taurus Millennium’s a pistol a good CCW option?

4) Or do I just keep the CZ’s and get her a small revolver in .38??

Much thanks in advance for your consideration and comments!!

I would SmartCarry a .38 J-frame, or a compact semiauto that is relatively lightweight. Carrying in scrubs requires some careful though.

I would suggest a purse designed to carry a gun rather than a gun to put in a purse. After that then see if a new gun is needed as with a proper gun purse your CZ PCR or gun of similar size would be fine. If you need to get another gun because your wife needs something that fits her better then look for something to do that.

Not in the purse! That's the thing that they grab! A gun should be on one's person, not in some bag that can be snatched or dropped. I was with a woman who had her purse snatched. It was over in a 1/2 second and the teenaged theif ran like a gazelle and was gone, disappeared into the crowd around the street corner. There was no way to stop it; it was too fast.

Pair of Glock 19's.

Or a 23 for yourself and a 19 for the wife.

Skip the subcompact Glocks, they hardly conceal better than the compact models. For a subcompact I'd recommend a Walther PPS or Keltec PM9.

I would try and rent a few guns with her. My wife is a revolver girl all the way. She likes the simplicity of a revolver. Her primary CCW is a S&W J frame .38 loaded with the remington FBI load (+P 158gr LHP). She will also carry my Ruger Security Six snub loaded with Speer 135gr short barrel .357's. The ONLY pistol of mine she will shoot is a SIG P6. She likes the narrow single stack grip with her small hands.

As for selling the CZ's...DON'T you WILL regret it!! I have a CZ-40B and it is one of my favorite, most accurate and reliable pistols I own! If your wife chooses a revolver, you can pick up a used S&W for between $250-350.

Yes I have discussed it with her. She liked the idea of a sub compact.

She won't be able legally carry into clients homes without their permission and I doubt the employer would allow it. So it would be for the car and on her person if she stopped at a store.

Purse was something we were looking at. She was concerned about someone going into it. We'll do some more research on CCW options for women.

If your wife doesn't care for the bulk of the double stack
PCR/P01, how about a single stack of proven design and
reliability? It's also in the price range where you could sell the
P01 You use the PCR for HD/SD and she can gat

Smith & Wesson 908 or 908S
9mm LUger mag cap. 8 + 1
DA/SA it is the economical finished
version of the 3913 and 39LS.

O.A.L. approx 6 1/2" which is the same as a 2" Snubbie
and has 9 shots versus the 5 shot J-frame

Alloy frame & Carbon Steel slide = 908
alloy frame & Stainless Steel slide = 908S
both have a stainless Steel barrel

I did a Google and Buds has them Approx $425.

THe narrower grip will probably fit the wife better
and it's more concealable with it's narrow profile.

buy a bunch of Fed American Eagle 147 gr. FP for
target/range practice, and get a couple of boxes
of Double Tap 147 gr. SPeer Gold DOt +P for Carry.

Randall and you're welcome.

Since money is tight have HER look at a Kel-Tec PF-9. It weighs only 12.8oz empty, is less than 1" thick and carries 7+1 rounds of 9mm. Best part, it's well under $300 NIB. If that's not small enough have HER look at a Kel-Tec P-3AT which is a .380 Auto. It is VERY small and weighs only 8.3oz and is only 5" long. It can be had for under $250 NIB. With those prices you probably won't have to sell anything you now own.

I own a Kel-Tec P-32 in .32 Auto which was bought before the P-3AT was manufactured and it's served me very well. It's so small your wife could carry it without anyone knowing she has it.

Kel-tec is your best option. I'd lean away from glocks, there to darn expensive for what they are. Other than that there a good weapon. Not the best and not the worst. My wife carries a PT111 Tuarus and loves it. I let her find the gun and so for it has been very reliable.

go and have her read thecorneredcat website - written by women for women on this issue; then let her rent and shoot some guns and let her decide what she wants......

imma have to go with woad_yurt's signature, and suggest a makarov. their not that big and they pack a pretty decent punch for their size. plus their on of the few guns ive seen that has ammo available with the bb's in the end of the round.

A word for a moment.

Home care involving those with mentals such as dementia and others... they are going to be attracted to shiney things, particularly something like a gun.

Imagine the liability should a patient get a hold of a weapon and ... you fill in the blank.

We work with home patients until they progress to a violent state and must be taken by a hospital, psych ward or nursing home against thier will. No guns or tasers anywhere while work is done. NOTHING.

In fact. These patients and thier families make sure to take out all weapons from the home the patient lives in forever and disposes of them.

With that in mind, what the hell are you thinking bringing a gun into a situation? Also oxygen and other gases may be in use and so forth so on...

Hungry Seagull - I failed to mention that since SC state law prohibits a CCW holder from entering another person's house with a concealed weapon without the permission of the homeowner, she would NOT be carrying into that situation.

This would be more for her car as she is driving all over the county and for her to carry where she legally can. In our circle of friends a number of the wives are getting their permits which is sparking her interest all the sudden.

Thanks for the website recommendations and the Kel-Tec. I'll have to check those out. I'd love to get a Makarov, for her of course. ;)

We'll have to take a ride to the gun store and rent a few for her to try.

If she's not carrying it on her person and money is tight, why doesn't she use the P-01? Instead of sitting in the safe, it can sit in the car.

If this is basically a car gun I gotta ask why the sub-compact? A lot of people who don't know any better go for small guns because they are less intimidating to carry. They are also harder to use well.

I would suggest not buying one until she has an opportunity to try it out ... and has actually tried stashing the larger pistol the way she normally intends to carry.

Saiga, it seems that your Folks in that fine state are beginning to experience awakening regarding guns too?

I think your state has reciprocal rights with Arkanas should your wife CCW or Travels here into Arkansas. I think Tennessee also honors your state and ours as well. Oklahoma and others.

That pretty much covers the south east? The problems begin north of Washington DC.

1. http://xavierthoughts.blogspot.com/

Xavier is a nurse, and is on Staff here at THR. I suggest you both read his blog, to gain some insights.

2. Let the wife try shooting a variety of guns - and- carry methods.
Xavier's blog, and his posts here on THR if you do a search, will share some quality information.

Bottom line, the wife is the nurse, that will be out and about. She not only has to know what her employers allow, and do not allow, also the local laws.

She has to have a gun that she has shot, and therefore fits her. She also needs to try carry methods, and more than one that fits not only her body type, also her mode of dress, and her environments.

So finding a Instructor ( perhaps CCW class) and expressing concerns and questions, may have other ladies and nurses show up, and allow her try before hand, thus allowing quality choices from the beginning.

i.e Scrubs, might mean one of the undershirts that allows carry under the arm ( shoulder holster style) and has pockets for speed strips, speed loaders, or magazines.

Some of these undershirts have pockets that allow appendix carry.
Scrub bottoms most often do not have belts...

One has to remember, with patients, and having to lift, and assist, means the patient comes into contact with the nurse.

Software first, then Hardware.
