I am looking for a pistol smith to do some 1911 work for me. There is no one local so I thought I look for recomendations for some where to ship off to.

Price and time for the work to get done matter, but quality of work is the most important.

Thanks.

Pistol smith

There are lot of smiths around,

I did a little search using the phrase, "1911 pistol smiths"

the results are somewhat overwhelming, but lots of good looking!

Tejas Smiths

In Texas? If you want a solid carry gun, check with Dave Berryhill. Dunno how long his waiting list is right now though...

If a racegun is in your future, I hear that Benny Hill is a pretty good hand with those. I think he's somewhere around Dallas. Don't take that to the bank.

Chuck Rogers is the man to see for comp guns...but he's way over yonder in Airy-Zona. Long wait for Raja.

I'm looking for more of a carry gun than a race gun. I've checked within a couple of hundred miles of where I am at and there are no GOOD pistol smiths around, so if I'm going to have to ship it off I don't care if a smith is in Texas or not.

Recomendations?

Ron,

Remember....
CHEAP-FAST-GOOD
you only get to pick two! ;)
If someone offers all three, be careful.

There are great smiths to be found at www.louderthanwords.us but I suspect few of them are accepting work.
Please provide us with specifics of the work you would like to have done.

Hey, Ron. There is a very good 1911 smith near my town. PM me if your iterested. I'll get you the information. He is pretty busy.

Joe,

Alas, the nearest one to me is over 400 miles away. I used to live in the same town with Mike Watkins and had him do my work until he moved off to work for Brownell's in Iowa. :-(

Chuck,

The most important thing to me is good. I would rather pay a little more and get fast, but there is a balance there. I have a colt .45 auto thata I would like to put a low mount set of BoMars on as well as a new front sight, get the slide ported and a beaver tail grip safety and a commander hammer. I also have a Colt slide, a Kart barrel and so on that I would like to put toget with a Caspian frame. And finally I have a Colt 22 conversion kit I would like to put on a Caspian frame.

Yo-Bo!

I'd pimp Ted Yost to his own mother.

Great guy, great work, fair price. The wait does tend to creep into years.....but if a guy can get your gun done in a week, it probably means no one else wants him working on their gun--not a good sign.
