I ordered a PK-01V red dot sight for my Saiga AK from FreedomOptics.com on 1/14/04. See it at http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bstkobra.html. It arrived by Priority Mail today, 1/17/04. (They are in Scarsdale, NY and I'm in SE PA.)

The sight was packed bubble wrapped inside a padded camo carrying case, inside a box. The carry case is well made and has belt loops and a carrying strap. Aside from the sight, the case contained the Weaver-style side rail mount, offset 30mm rings which put the sight centerline over the bore, a 3mm hex key, a screw-on anti-glare shield for the objective lens, a lens wiping cloth, a hair brush for dusting the lenses, an instruction manual in Russian, and a sheet in English explaining how to adjust the mount to fit on your AK's side rail. The sight itself is fitted with rubber lens caps. Two "357" batteries are also included and both are needed to power the sight.

Happily, the mount fit right onto the siderail on my AK without any adjustments.

I mounted the sight in the rings and on the mount. After putting the unit on my rifle I saw that the red dot was almost at the edge of view at about 2:00. Moving the windage and elevation knobs had no apparent effect. After looking at pictures of the sight mounted on an AK, found at Tantal's page (http://tantal.kalashnikov.guns.ru/bstkobra.html), I realized that I had the unit backwards. DUH!

With that figured out, I remounted the sight the right way and the dot appeared in the center of the field of view.

The adjusting knobs appear to work like those found on American-made optics, as compared with the funky adjustments on the Russian-made Kobra red dots.

Overall, the unit seems robust and the mount is very secure. When mounted it's directly over the bore, and pretty low. You cannot use the irons with the unit mounted but since it removes with the throw of a lever I don't see that as a problem.

I won't get to shoot the rifle with the PK-01V mounted for a little while but I am really looking forward to. It gives me fast target acquisition and should allow me to shoot better groups than the open iron sights.

Here is a photo of the PK-01V mounted my Saiga converted to look like an AK-103 (pardon the fugly carpet background):
