I need a hand here. I’m going on a trip and plan to visit a friend from college. He thought it might be more fun to go shoot while I’m there rather than visit the local coffee shop, and I heartily agree! However, while he thinks shooting is fun and all, he doesn’t shoot very often (at all, really) when he is home, so he doesn’t know of any decent places to go shooting. Do any of you know of any place to shoot anywhere close to Council Grove, KS? It is close to Manhattan, kinda distant from Topeka, etc. Smack in the middle of the eastern half of Kansas. We’re willing to drive a little bit, so if you know of a good place that would be great!

Would rather it not be an indoor range...

Fancy Creek Range; north of Manhattan 25 minutes on 77 just north of Randolph for pistols and rifle. If you want trap, there's a trap shoot just 3 minutes north of Manhattan, also on 77.

Have you been there? Is it crowded? Do they have a problem with rapid fire, drawing and shooting, etc?

    Probably shooting pistols.

    Bit late, but here goes.

Fancy creek is at Milford lake, near junction city. Its outdoor, and a range officer is usually present. There's also an indoor range in Junction city, named Godfreys. You can rent full autos there. JC is under an hour from CG.

In Topeka we have the gun garage indoor range. Rifles up to .308. Topeka is under 2hrs away. The Topeka gun club is private, and unless you know someone who knows someone, you wont get in.

There's one going up in elk city too, not sure if its complete yet. That's south by Wichita. You may also check emporia. If all else fails, Marion reservoir is a cool place to hang out and explore, but Kanopolis S.P. is better.

We ended up going to Fancy Creek. Nice place! Not too busy, ROs were pleasant enough, they had some steel set up, etc. Reasonable price too.
