Ok, I've searched the threads and feel I understand where I can and cannot carry in Alabama. The law appears to restrict only carrying while either in a public demonstration or within 1000 ft of a demonstration. Also, you cannot carry in K-12 with intent to do harm, but LEOs and permit holders are explicitly exempted from the restriction from carrying in K-12 schools. Several posters mentioned not being able to carry in places that serve alcohol or while consuming alcohol, but I cannot find those sources and it does not say this on my permit. Here is what I am most concerned with:

1. Are all state and local government buildings off limits?
2. If so, would a publically funded college be considered a government building?
3. Are hospitals off limits; and if not are they if they are publically funded?
4. Are places that serve alcohol off limits?
5. Can you not carry if you have consumed alcohol?

Also, where is a good place to get info on legalities of CCW? handgunlaw.us has some info and apparently packing.org is gone. I would like to know the rules for Alabama in particular, but I would also like a place to research laws of other states while carrying. also, a good source for federal law (such as the national parks, WMA, etc provided by handgunlaw.us)

thanks for the help

The best place to check is the Code of Alabama. Most firearms laws are in 13A-11 (starting around 13A-11-50 iirc).

There is only one place with an absolute restrictions of carrying firearms: While participating in a 'public demonstration'. A public demonstration is very specific and defined in the same code section. It's only illegal to carry within 1000 feet or whatever if you have already been warned once by a police officer.

You are right about the restriction in schools. It's only illegal for a non-permit holder to carry in K-12 if he intends to do harm. I think there might be a federal restriction on this though (although it exempts permit holders iirc).

State parks have their own rules against carrying firearms. National forests and such are fine though (the Natl. forest near me even has a shooting range). Also be careful to not bring firearms into federal buildings like post offices.

Most other places that you can't carry firearms have metal detectors/armed guards (most courthouses). I don't know where in the code it allows them to restrict weapons there, but I figure no point in arguing with armed guards :)

Most state buildings, by law, cannot restrict carrying of firearms. In fact state agencies can't prohibit employees from carrying firearms as well (all in the pre-emption code).

It's not illegal to carry on a public university, but if you are a student/employee they will most likely fire/suspend/expel you. Some universities in Alabama are stricter than others. I know several people personally that were caught with firearms and weren't expelled. (They did get in 'trouble' though).

It's also possible for Sheriffs to give you a 'restricted' pistol permit that restricts the time/places you can carry a concealed weapon. Most Sheriffs issue unrestricted licenses. Even if you are issued a restricted license that prohibits carry in a bar or something you can still legally carry unconcealed and the Sheriff can't do anything about it.... There is even a fairly recent court case upholding the preemption laws that invalidates a city's ordnance against carrying in a bar...

It's illegal to 'deliver' a firearm to a 'habitual drunkard' in Alabama. Nothing about already possessing a firearm as one or carrying while intoxicated. I wouldn't recommend it from a safety standpoint... but I see nothing illegal about it.
