Hi gang,

I'm new to Portland and to the board, but I'm searching for something that seems to be rather elusive around the PDX Metro area - a good, inexpensive place to shoot!
I posted on Criagslist to find some places and got only responses to The English Pit (which I've been to before), but, it's closed and doesn't sound like it's going to be opening anytime soon.
Another suggestion I got was to hit Brown's Camp. Apparently, there's a big rock quarry where you shoot. I Googled it and somehow stumbled upon an old, archived article written by a few of you boys, most notably the member, "Bang".
So, I am looking for a gun range that is not the "Johnson Club" (gotta buy their ammo? ***?) or "The Place to Shoot". All these places (including the ones around Portland) are charging ridiculous fees to shoot. It shouldn’t cost $120+ just to go through one box of rounds. I'm an occasional shooter, and have only one gun, not an avid every-weekend type of guy (nothing wrong with that, mind you).
Honestly, I'm just looking for a place outside, free (or close to it) and somewhat in the Portland area. I'm responsible and pick up all my used casings, I just don't feel it's right to shell out big bucks to shoot.

If anyone can help me out with some suggestions on places OR an accurate description of where the Brown's Camp "Dump" is, please post back. I'd be much obliged.

This came up on another forum, and this link was provided, but it's all indoor ranges. I belong to a range here in Mac, but it's in a flood plain and I believe it's under water now, so I'll be keeping an eye out for alternatives too.

When I moved here about a year and a half ago, I went to the police station and asked where the local shooting range was. They looked at me like I had two heads, and said that "when folks want to go plinking, they just go off into the woods". I've hooked up with some people who have lived here for years, and when we can all make time at the same time, we're going to do just that -- but I haven't done it yet.

Check out this link on an AR forum. I didn't go through all the threads, but IIRC one of them may have directions to the "Dump".

I found this on a thread there, this is the kind of location they scout.

Last year I followed a thread there around this time of year, and a number of the good locations required 4WD and chains Dec-March.

Next week I'm going to check out my range again - it was muddy last time I was there about two weeks ago, but not "under water". If it's still usable and you're willing to drive an hour, let me know, and we can make some time to shoot.

Went back to that link and in the "official first shoot of 2006" thread found this map. Also, confirmed, you'll need chains and 4WD to get there.

And try this thread

OH, and btw, I've never met any of these folks, but they seem nice... :D

My Road - Thanks a lot for the good info!
I guess I'll have to skip Browns Camp as I have a 2 door car, so chains/4wd are not an option...

But, the list for the indoor ranges sure helps! Again, great info, thanks again!!
