I recently moved to Sherwood Oregon (close to the Portland metro area), and I'm looking for a good public land spot to shoot at.

Grateful for your suggestions.

The closest public land to Sherwood will be Tillamook State Forest, about a 1-hour drive to the northwest. Take HWY 217 North to HWY 26 West to HWY 6 West. Brown's Camp is a huge area just off HWY 6 on the way to Tillamook, with mixed use of horse trails, Jeep trails, dirt bike/atv trails, camping, and informal gravel shooting pits. Right across the highway from Brown's Camp is Storeyburn Road, a much less populated area with almost 100% of the use being target shooting (and logging, of course). Storeyburn gets much less attention, and therefore can be snowed in and inaccessible for a couple of months during the winter. But if it's clear, you're almost guaranteed a private shooting spot with a suitable backstop. Just be sure not to shoot at any live trees, or from or across a road, or across a canyon or ravine. And please, please, please clean up after yourself. These areas are littered with junk and trash, and probably won't remain open to target shooting forever if people keep treating them like garbage dumps.
