I wasn't 100% sure they were going to let me compete with my XP-100.
They had a safety concern, and then there was the whole, can he hit anything concern, even though it was not expressly said.
I think the pistol/15" barrel/55 grain bullet for longer distances, kind of had them wondering.
That being said, they were extremely welcoming.
Dan called ahead, since they had met him at the last match a couple of months previous (he used a rifle), and asked on my behalf.
Main reason he called, is we were not sure they would let me use a 20 caliber, because of possible damage to steel.
That was not even a issue. I think their main concern was safety. They had real good RO's.
Now it is not a issue anymore-that's the good thing!
All the guys from Gillette were like...Ernie is shooting a specialty pistol at distance...No Surprise There:D
Since there was no more than 10 shots per stage, it made it easy.
I have a 8 round wrist ammo holder, then my little 2-round holder, just in front of my action.
I have rifles, that could have been very competitive. I can shoot a rifle just fine, but I don't use them unless I have to.
I like specialty pistols, because that is what I like.

A 2:30 par time and 55grn 20 cals would be a match made in Heaven for an SP in PRS match. I’ve never shot a PRS/NRL match with 2:30’s, only 90sec and 2:00 stages, but I’d sure make use of the extra 30 seconds if I were shooting an SP!

Spotting impacts from certain obstacles with a conventional 6mm cartridge and 105-115grn bullets in an SP would be tough from some obstacles. I struggle enough as it is when I’m trying to wrangle the rifle on the tip of a tank trap, and I know it gets a lot worse without a shoulder involved. Barricade shooting with an SP really isn’t so bad, certainly not as bad as most folks would expect - they drive very similar to a rifle when they have full contact with the bag beneath them.

Ernie has the best article ever published on long range specialty pistol shooting in Spring 2007 edition of Dakota magazine, entitled, "7mm Dakota". Watched him run 8 in a row I think it was at 585 on 10" steel plates at the '04 ITRC up in Gillette, WY with a 6.5-284 Greg Tannel XP. Never forget that one... and the world record prairie dog SP shot at 1585 in 9 shots (115 DTAC 6-284...i think it was). I saw the bullet fly into that dog through my Big Eyes-unforgettable! He is the man when it comes to this game.

Nice to see people thinking outside the box. I've always been interested in the bolt action handguns but never bought one.

I am so blessed to have such good friends both far and near.
Some good friends (4) close to me are helping me the next two days setting two different steel courses in two different locations on the same ranch.
We should have an extra helper for Saturday
There will be 6-10 targets per stage on six different stages on both courses.
Distances will range between 150-200 yards to out to around 1300 yards.
5", 10", some 12", and handful of targets that are bigger will be used.
I have a KYL plate rack which is used on both courses too.
For further targets I have 20 hit indicator lights as well.
It is a big production for me, and I couldn't do it with really good help.
One of my friends who lives far from me, was the inspiration that is on our cap this year:
"If you can see it you can hit it!"
If there wasn't such a crowd, I would love to have him up here shooting and or helping.
This steel shoot and prairie dog shoot is for handguns only.
The 2-day steel match doesn't have any revolvers or semi-autos, but specialty pistols...handguns that shoot bottleneck rifle cartridges.
The pd portion of the shoot is for any type of handgun
