Seems to me that the M1A is the best choice if:
1. That's what you want.
2. Your wife won't let you buy any ARs.
3. You think the ARs are ugly.
4. You don't care about modularity.
5. You live somewhere the ARs are illegal/the cops harass you at the range even if you are legit.
I'm somewhere between 1&2 and kind of 3 and 5 is a real issue. So I won't be getting one, even if I had the money, though everything else being equal (which of course they never are) I'd take the AR and promptly also get a .338 Fed upper and a .243 upper ASAP!
