Lionking - do you realize that it's just a signature notary? I do mine when I'm at the bank making a deposit or withdrawal. It's free (at every bank I've ever been too) and most teller's are setup to do it. I've never been in a bank lobby where there wasn't someone who could do it.

FWIW.

Regards,
Dave

In Indiana, we don't have to take a shooting class or anything to get our Concealed Carry permits. Will a copy of my permit still get me passed the markmenship part?

ETA: I take it these are shipped to your door instead of going through an FFL?

fish,

On the part of CCW..... call CMP and ask.

Re shipping to your door..... Yes.

the only thing that has stopped me from buying a Garand from the CMP is after following all the rules then they told me I must get it notorized......I provided proof of my ID,I joined the Garand society $75 a year,I filled out all the paper work....but then to do that also,I just haven't bothered.

by the time you join the Garand society,do this do that, pay for a notory, fill the paper work......I could see it if you bought several firearms but to just buy one....it becomes a hassle. At some point it's just easier to by a CMP Garand for more off another seller.

king...

I see what you mean...... $25 to join the GCA, a photo copy of a BC, a photo copy of a FFL-03 (C&R) CCW or Hunter Saftey Certificate, Fill out paperwork and have it notarized (free) the next time I stop in at my bank.....

Yeah Man... I can see how doing ALL that HASSLE would really outweigh the advantages of buying a good M1 at a $300-$400 savings from what you'd pay for an equal condition rifle at a gunshow. ;) :D

If you really feel that way... then I guess that's one more M1 the CMP has with my name on it. :)

eventually I'll go all the way,and I thought a notory was not free, thanks for the info. And like I said, most at shows I have always past up,but at least buying in person you can inspect the rifle, while having it shipped to you is roll the dice.Unless you can go to the CMP,most of us can't.

Since I have a couple Garands and a nice carbine I have been focusing on getting other types, but when I get serious about wanting a CMP rifle I'll go through it then.

And auctions or private can sometimes land you one for not that much more.I have seen some nice ones pass between members here at the THR and Ambackforum, where members are generally honest and reasonable.

The Garand gods have smiled

After the drive to Anniston, AL, I was able to get into the store without any difficulty (This totally flies in the face of what I was told a couple of years ago.). However, lets just say that the selection was rather limited. All they really had were rack, field, and National Match Grades. I was fustrated! :banghead:

I narrowed my choices down to two, and when I went to the counter the lady said she had found a "Special" grade in the back and wondered if I would be interested. YES!! :) These were the ones Dick Tylock mentioned in this thread. I was SO lucky to get my hands on one of these. Thanks for the heads up Dick Tylock!

So I basically got a new Garand which fit all the criteria I had set. This has made my month. I would like to thank wrench, P-32, MAKster, dmftoy1, alamo, Gator, and 45 nut for pointing me in the right direction.

I'm having problems figuring out how to post a picture. I'll post it as soon as i figure it out.

BTW, is 1700+ rounds an OK start on ammo?

wrench: Yes master... what shall I do? ;)

dude your happiness shows through so well that I feel uplifted right now also.Congrats,I know you will be in real extra extra joy when you shoot it.

I have a few guns,I like them all but in the the end it's the Garand that I always seem to enjoy most.

1700 ugh?Yeah I guess that will last a little while.

Bumping the thread I guess.

I'm an Indiana resident and I, too, wonder if our CHL will be good enough.
Although I DID take a Michigan CCW class just for the heck of it and have documentation that I completed it, including range time. I wonder if that would be sufficient???? Any Indiana people out there that may know the answer to this question?

Your NRA certificate from the CCW class you took in Michigan will work.

If you want to be 100% sure, call the CMP and ask.

Nugilum, CONGRATS!!!!

Now for your next assignment . .you now need to shoot a CMP or John C Garand match! There's something cool about the rapid fire segments where the clips are pinging and the newbies are getting a case of Garand Thumb. :)

It's your money. My notary was free, though, just did it at my bank. The ones I got through CMP were pretty nice, but I hear it can be a bit of a crapshoot. My latest collector's grade is gorgeous, I must say. Very happy with it.

congrats again.

I'm getting flak for my comment but once again,I don't have anything against the CMP and in the future if I get the urge I will do what I have to do to purchase a rifle from them I thought notory was a fee,for now I'm content to get ammo from them because I have a few Garands already.........my focus lately has been on accumulating M1A's and Mausers...........and now a Pedersoli Creedmore has caught my imagination.....

What I wish is that the CMP would sell M1911a1's..........it would bring a wider market and bring down hopefullya little the crazy prices that are right now.

A collector grade or at least a real nice M1 is going for about the same as a run of the mill Remington Rand 1911a1.There has to be stashes of 1911's somewhere just waiting to come back from a foreign source?

Never happen.....

The terms of the CMP's Congressional Charter is very specific about what they are authorized to distribute to US Citizens.... i.e. ".22 and .30 caliber RIFLES that are surplus to US military needs".

No mention of handguns or .45 caliber... therefore not authorized, and even if the US Army had such stashed back somewhere, they could not transfer them to the CMP.

Nice dream though...... right alongside BAR's, M14's, etc.....

Yup, way too much trouble to have my bank notarize the papers, copy my DD214, join the GCA for about $25, then -- on top of all that, have to pay $612 (w/ shipping via FedEx right to my door) for a crappy Service Grade Garand like this:

:neener:

yeah I know swampy,"tis just a dream.

c'mon guys, you are never gonna let me live my comment down?:pI must have struck a serious nerve, but I wasn't giving the CMP any bad thoughts at all other than just my personal state of mind right now.

If,I was in the market for a Garand, that is where I would focus.....but I'm not.Now a choice M1903a3 on the other hand, well I could be pursuaded for another one....right now!;)

Nice rifle.

The CMP requirements are really not that bothersome. Just get the application notarized, make a copy of your birth certificate or passport, join a club, and fulfill the safety requirement. The safety requirement isn't all that hard either. I'm not a veteran, and I didn't even take part in a match. All I did was have the safety officer at the local range sign off on it. CMP accepted it, no problem. There aren't any real obstacles preventing a US citizen from owning a quality Garand.

One of the perks of being a US citizen is they qualify for really cheap M1 Garands. Curses my immigrant arse and its Britishness. Though I did get my wife to sign up for a C&R license now as part of the requirements. It be her rifle. I'll just fondle it a little.

No GCA here. I joined the Nebraska Marksmanship Association for $5. Even got a membership card. Made the photocopies at work, had the plant manager notarize it.

I saw the one you got strat81,real nice!BTW,I have a few strats also...couple LP's too.Guitar and guns,sooo much fun!

Here a picture similar to my rifle.

I stole this picture from iamkris since we have identical looking rifles. :D
I am very satisfied with my acquisition. Thanks for the heads up on the CMP. It was definitely worth the drive.
Going to the Anniston AL, store removed any possible complications I could have had compared to buying through the mail. Also if I hadn't been there I would not have been able to get the "Special" grade.

Now does anyone have any ideas how I can con my wife into stopping at the CMP store when we drive by it?

wrench: Yes master... what shall I do?

Continue along the path you have selected, grasshopper, there you will find happiness!
Bang,bang,bang,bang,bang,bang,bang,bang-PING! :D

Get back to us when you have gotten her to the range, with photos!

And PS, it's Mistress:neener:

Not to bad mouth CMP or anyone else but I ran into a problem living on an island in southeast Alaska and CMP requiremnets. For my money I went through Atlantic Firearms and received a beautiful Garand that had been completely gone through and refinished, while not "number matching" or "historicaly correct" it looks great, shoots excellent and even came with a one year warranty. Just another option for anyone in similar situations.

Okay...lemme get this straight. I spend $25 to join the GCA, send off paperwork and such (and I know my bank has a notary service, free to account holders)...PAY the people, of course....

And I get it shipped to MY door???????? :D :D :D

(I know that a FFL transfer is generally not a "big deal," but it turned out to be a VERY VERY "big deal" with the last time I needed one, due to an oddity with the FFL and the poor organizational skills of the seller...:( )

Sooooo....CCW permit holder, NRA/GOA/SAF/Grass Roots NC member...so...

1) IF I sign up with the Garand Collector's Association or other proper group, would that cover me?

2) I was really hoping, if not NEEDING to put off any big purchases till later this year...these ain't, like, in danger of 'going away' anytime soon are they?
