I just bought a 625-10. It rattles like my newborn sons toys. I didn't really expect to pay that much for a performance center revolver to sound like this. It does it side to side, up and down, and front to back, right above the grip under the side plate. Is something wrong? Can it be quieted? Do they all do this? Please tell me I'm not the only one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Short answer: nope, it shouldn't.
In describing the rattle, does it seem as if it is coming from inside the grips or higher up?
Does it rattle when it is fully loaded with the moon clips?

higher than the grip, behind the cylinder, below the hammer. Does it just the same when loaded with the moon clips. Thanks

I think what you are hearing is the hammer block, which is designed to float - works better that way. ;)

If it really bugs you a gunsmith can pop the sideplate and put a dab of thick grease in the slot the hammer block fit in.

End of rattle. :)

If the hammer block is the "square-ish" piece under the firing pin then thats what it is. I just looked again and that is definatly the rattling part. Thanks for the help

I did call S&W today, and after looking further at the gun I understood what the hammer block was, and that it is the rattling part. S&W customer service rep also said that's what it was. I asked If all 625's made the rattle noise. She said yes, (I don't know about that  ). I also asked if it could be fixed. She said that "it is what it is" whatever that means. So I guess I just live with it. Thanks for the response. I truly appreciate it.

If you're not happy with the answer from that
S&W rep, call back and talk to another one.The
results could be different or try to talk to a
person in the Performance center.BTW all
the smith revolvers i've owned have had that
type of rattle but most of the time it's not
very loud,jast a clicking sound.

koondawg:

The part in question is found in most Smith & Wesson revolvers made since 1945. Its purpose is to block the hammer so that if the gun is dropped on a hard surface and lands on the hammer spur the hammer can't be driven forward enough so that the firing pin hits a primer, causing an accidental discharge.

The hammer block moves up and down in a slot milled in the sideplate, and there is enough clearence so that it can move freely. Sometime this causes the rattle that is bugging you. Understand that your revolver is not defective, and the rattle is not unusual.

However in your case it is clear that you can't stand the rattle and want it to go away. Gunsmiths offer two solutions:

1. Some put a slight bend in the block so there is just enough tension to stop the rattle. Done correctly this doesn't effect its operation.

2. They put a dab of thick grease in the sideplate's slot, and this usually stops the rattle.

Without question the rattle can be done away witn. The question is, "is it worth the trouble?" :)

I understand, I was just expecting this gun to be a take like my grandfathers 38 Special from when he was sheriff. Thats a solid pistol. I'm gonna go shoot today. So if it shoots good I can live with the noise.:D Thanks again.

I agree that Grandpa's .38 is undoubtedly a solid gun - just like mine. But if it was made before 1945 it wouldn't have the current style of hammer block, and therefore no rattle.

Now go shoot... :D

Well I went and shot today :fire:. Out of 3 different loaded moonclips totaling 18 shots, 10 shots fired. The rest were struck with the firing pin but not enough. The dimples in the primer were not as deep as the rounds that fired. I tryed 3 different brands of ammo. That didn't help. Also tryed the ammo in my other 45 and it fired perfect. Thats pretty sad when a $150 Hi-point out shoots a brand new $930 dollar S&W performance center.:fire: Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Call S&W and have them send you a return shipping label, it is not right and since it is a PC gun have them make it right, S&W's number is 800-331-0852
Make sure you send them an empty case so they can see the primer dent.
Just do not leave it in the cylinder.

Before you send it back.

Take off the grips, see the screw in the front of the grip frame?

Thats the mainspring tension screw also known as the strain screw.

Take a proper fitting screwdriver and carefully check and see if its screwed down all the way. My guess is its not. If its loose thats your cause of the light primer hits.

Recently I held an 8 shot PC 627 and the shop owner invited me to try the trigger, it was very light in DA, but you could feel the action parts of the gun cycling when you pulled it. I told him the strain screw was loose. He checked it, and sure enough it was. The hitchy feel went away and the pull weight went up a pound or two.
