I’ve never posted on this sight before, but I’ve lurked for quite a while. This is by far, the best, most informative sight that I have come across. But now, I really need some advice. Here’s the deal. I need some advice as to what to buy next. I’ve been shooting for a long time but I’ve never had more than more than two or three guns. I currently have a DPMS .223 carbine, a 6” SS Colt Python, S&W 1911PD 4.25” .45., and a SIG 229.

Here is the hard part: I just bought a house and the wife and I have agreed that my bonus is mine to do what ever I want with, and she can do whatever she wants with hers. So that leads me to my question: I have about $1500.00 to spend on a gun or two, but I cannot buy another one for a full year. I don’t hunt, and these would be for target/fun/SHTF. I have already budgeted in ammo and my range membership is paid up for almost 2 years. I have narrowed my choices to these guns that I have fired and liked, but am open to new ideas. Please no Glocks, X-D’s, or the like. I have nothing against them, but prefer guns with a hammer.

My choices so far are:
Beretta 92FS
Browning HiPower
H&K USP
A full size 1911
Springfield M1a
An AR10 type rifle
Winchester/Marlin lever carbine
Sig 220

As I said, I am also open to other suggestions, comments or smart remarks.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance, and keep up the great work here at The High Road.

Choices, pesky choices...

Here ya go, buy all three:

Browing High power
Springfield Mil Spec
Marlin Lever gun in pistol caliber, say .44 Magnum

You then get to experiment to see which you like the most... :)

I've spent well under $1500 on my last three purchases and love all of them because they just work like they should and are as accurate as I am:

Bulgarian Makarov
Romanian AK
CZ 75D PCR

All were excellent values and are reasonably cheap to shoot. Seems like eastern Europe is the place to shop if you're looking for value. The only FT anything I've seen with these was a failure to fire with the AK when it drove a primer into the shell without setting it off; Wolf ammo related in my book.

The PCR is the perfect handgun for me.

Springfield M1A or alternatively the Springfield M1 Garand (but get it in .308 - cheaper and more readily available ammo).

Both are fun target and plinking guns and both are suitable as SHTF guns (my definition of SHTF anyway).

thanks for the help so far

i'm leaning towards a BHP, but can any tell me about the CZ pistols. I've never fired one, and it seems that people who have them love them. Can anyone school me on them.

I would like another rifle, but I mainly shoot indoors. But the Marlin in a pistol caliber is interesting. Can anyone that has one tell me about them.

I thank you for your help.

Man did you just open up a can of worms. The CZ guys (of which I am one) will be coming out of the closet now.

CZ Pistols are probably the best kept secret and bang for the buck around. I've got two a CZ-75B 9mm dual tone (my wife thinks it is hers - I let her believe that) and a CZ-75B SA in .40 S&W which I shoot in IPSC.

Both are extremely accurate out of the box (in fact they are with the exception of my S&W 1911 Target the most accurate of all my handguns - well maybe my S&W 686 is more accurate but it's a revolver). The 9mm has been 100% reliable over many thousands of rounds. The .40 had a failed trigger but that is the exception for a CZ and not the rule. They are easy to take down, clean and maintain AND they are all metal construction - big plus for me - I like the feel of a heavier gun. Extra magazines are not expensive at all (unless you buy them from CZ) - just stay away from Pro-Mag (argghghg - don't get me started on them).

CZ makes a wide variety of models in it's 75 line with various finishes and features built on a common frame. You can see them all here CZ USA

In most places you can pick up a 75 model for less than $440 (even less in some localities) and have a pistol that is in my opinion as good as any off the shelf model by the high end gun manufacturers.

I love problems like this. Spending other people's money is always fun.

But seriously, you have a very nice assortment already, and if I were to add to it, I'd personally go for the M1A or AR10 platform because you lack a rifle with a caliber starting with "3".:D

I'm a .223 fan myself, but a .308 in the same basic platform would be extremely nice and would lend itself to a degree of versatility I don't currently have.

I can't imagine you're unhappy with those three handguns, which cover all your bases rather well, so I'd add a centerfire rifle.

I'm just curious, do you have a .22 pistol and/or rifle too? Because for pure fun, you can't beat 'em!

I don't have .22 pistol

I was thinking of getting a .22 conversion kit. Can any onr tell me if someone makes one that will work on the S&W 1911, or will any of the kits work?

M1A,because I want one myself and whenever I have that kind of cash on hand thats my next purchase.
Funny,Im the opposite position,my house is for sale which after it sells Ill will be in a position to purchase firearms again.;)
