Please Help With Marlin 39as Sight Options

I would like to know what options are available for sights for a Marlin 39AS. I believe this is the "Golden" model with the long barrel and pistol grip stock.

The factory sights are horrible to me and I am considering some kind of peep sight. I want adjustable elevation and windage.

What are the functional differences between a tang sight and a receiver sight? Does the tang sight interfere with the grip? Does the receiver sight mount to the holes in the receiver intended for the scope mount, or is there drilling and tapping involved?

Looking through the Brownells catalog, it seems the cheapest option might be the Williams Economy Receiver sight. Somewhere around $35 I believe. Is there any thing wrong with this?

Is there any significant differences between the different manufacturers?

I have a 39A(S) and just put a Marble's peep tang sight on it. You will have to drill and tap one hole in your tang but the sight screw holes will not require defacing your serial number.(It's covered but not defaced). My rifle is a newer one that did not have the two holes in the receiver for a Williams receiver sight. You might want to check yours for those holes before you decide. I love the Marble's tang peep. Windage and elevation have a lot of adjustment room and there is no need to remove the rear standard sight. (just fold the leaf down if it is in the way). Looks and works great. I can't recomend it more highly. Edited to add; Yes the tang sight does slightly interfere with the grip when it's folded down. When it's up, no problem.

besides a peep sight..maybe take a look at some of the red dot optics.I have a red-dot on my 39A.it didnt require any modification to the gun..just a weaver base and a 30mm scope/30mm rings

I have a receiver mounted Williams peep sight on mine. No drilling required.

Mine was made in 2001 and by then they had stopped the drilling and tapping for the receiver sights. The option would have been nice but I prefer the Tang peep anyway. I guess that was a cost-cutting move on Marlin's part. Love the rifle though, crossbolt safety and all.

Go to Brownells, type the keywords "marlin 39 sight" into the search box, hit enter, and checkout what's available (there's like 10 or 15 to choose from).

I have a "XS SIGHT SYSTEMS" receiver sight on my 39TD (it's just like your 39AS but has a 20" barrel and it's old enough it doesn't have that god awful safety button thingy). For the money I think it's the best aftermarket sight you could put on your rifle. No drill-and-tapping, it fits the existing holes in the top of the receiver.

I also have a Williams FP sight on a Marlin .30-30. It's a good sight, but I like the XS way better. -- Kernel

I have a receiver mounted Williams peep sight on mine. No drilling required.

I do also. It's easy to install and works well. No adjustment or replacement of the front sight was necessary.

It is kind of fat though and mounts to the side of the reciever. That's just a cosmetic issue though.

Another vote for the XS Sighting Systems sights. Just put one on my 1894 and love it. Pops right in the scope mount holes.

Marlin 39as

I put a Williams sight on my Marlin, I think it's the model is 5D - screwed right on and is nice to use.
