A hot gun that discharged a round into a woman's hip early this morning wasn't stolen — it was literally being cooked.
Hidden inside an oven, the .357 revolver went off as Roxanne Perez began warming a meal in her South Side apartment.
The 29-year-old heard several shots, then felt a sharp pain in her left hip, a police report stated. She had no idea what hit her.
As it turned out, someone Perez knew stored the gun for safekeeping in the bottom drawer of Perez's oven about two weeks ago, then "completely forgot about it" — at least until the shots rang out.
The person heard the gunfire from another apartment, ran over to see what the commotion was about, and knew immediately what had happened: the gun left in the oven had discharged when Perez began cooking.
Police have ruled the shooting an accident, and said they do not expect to file any criminal charges. Perez, meanwhile, was reportedly in good condition at Wilford Hall Medical Center.
She told police she had no idea a revolver was being stored in her oven.
