I wanted to get your recommendations for the best rifle shooting rest for use for long range. I see at the range some of the guys were using the Caldwell Lead Sled DFT. But some reviews I have read said it was not the best for stability - that it was better suited for recoil reduction that I really am not after. I am really after trying to get something that will help me get the best groups my rifles are capable.

Caldwell makes The Rock 1000 yard model. A friend has the Rock, but not the 1000 yard model.
We've both used it pretty often. We mostly shoot 100 yards, occasionally out to 200 yards. From the looks of the 1000 yard model, it might work for you.
Midway sells both models, and usually one or both is on sale. Check their web site since they have a pretty good picture and description of both models.

Depends what long range means and what rifle.
For a rifle with a reasonable stock design and trigger sandbags will do a fine job up to a point.
After that point the aiming point is grossly adjusted with the rest for large adjustments and when adjustments are made with the rest then the best is none too good.
Bench rest shooting typically requires moving between the sighter and the record group and such relatively gross movements go better with proper repeating rests with fancy heads to fit the rifle which get to be expensive - like repeatable click adjustments on a scope to move the group around every click should give equal movements every time.
For normal load testing at hunting ranges almost anything works fine to rest the rifle on.

I use a sinclair front rest (ele and windage adjustable) and protektor rear "bunny ear" bag. Works great. I have 3 different bags for the rest. They are easy to switch out and can accomadate most long guns.

I use a Benchmaster for sighting rifles in, except for my AR's, and then just use sand bags for target shooting. I've seen a lot of people using Buck's Bags or similar, but have no experience with them myself.
