In two weeks time I'll be in Arizona visiting the family and looking at
property for a retirement spot.

Oh yes, and buying guns.....:D

Everything that Australia's little P.M. Johnny Howard doesn't like,
I hope to obtain an example of.:neener:

Phoenix and north will be my shopping area.

What shops have been good to you?

Thanks.

Are you getting you US citizenship? Resident alien card? Please remeber the laws have tightened up, and you must be a resident alien or naturalized US citizen to purchase firearms. That out of the way, WELCOME! J&G Sales are a great outfit I have done business with several times in the past.

I'm in Prescott. We've got a pretty good selection of firearm dealers in the area.

J&G Sales can be fun but they're kind of a hassle to deal with if you actually want to buy something - they're always busy and it takes forever to get someone to help you. Look over their flyer and website before you go.

I like High Country Guns & Knives and The American Gunshop in Prescott, and Prescott Valley Guns in (surprise!) Prescott Valley. Smaller shops, but with reasonable prices and friendly staff/owners.

Well, this is creepy... I've got family in Alice Springs (and Katherine) and family in Northern AZ. Small world.

That being said, I'm not sure about dealers in Northern AZ; how far north (east or west?) are you talking about?

Prescott Valley Guns and J&G Sales are 2 that I always go to when I'm up in Prescott.

If you are in Phoenix, Bear Arms at Scottsdale Rd. and Shea is one of my favorites. They have a large inventory at good prices.

Edit: Oh, I forgot Legendary Guns at 19th Ave. and Camelback. www.legendaryguns.com

Also, Sportsman's Warehouse is a good store and they just opened up the new Cabela's in Glendale.

Also check out High Noon Shooting Parlour in Prescott Valley. They have a small decent selection of new and used firearms, and an indoor pistol shooting range.

Thanks for that......

armoredman:

I am a U.S. citizen. Born in Indiana and spent the first 40 years in the U.S.
Got my U.S. passport, my old Ajo Driver's licence to bring along and looking forward to being back in AZ! :D

JesseL:

Sounds like Prescott is the place to visit first. I'll do that.

Jac:

Alice Springs is an amazingly cosmopolitan place for a town of 30,000
isolated in the middle of one of the world's largest arid zones.
There are approximately 2,000 U.S. citizens in town, many working for U.S. Defense Department contractors at Pine Gap Joint Defence Facility.

That's one of the reasons I like it here...my Hoosier accent doesn't get too rusty.;)

I'll be investigating as much of Northern Arizona as I can for a place to retire.

silhanek:

How is the new Cablela's for guns?
It's on my way out of town from Sky Harbor.:)

Many thanks for the ideas.

It's a long-term plan happening for me.:)

DanceTiger:

Yup, looks like the Prescott area is the place to be for gun shopping.:)

I went there on the 2nd weekend they were open. (About 3 weeks ago.) Parking wasn't bad and the people congestion was manageble. We went into the Gun Room and looked at some of the high dollar stuff. I didn't really look at the approx. 50ft long gun counter since it was packed shoulder to shoulder with people. The wildlife displays and fish aquarium are worth the visit. I'm planning on going back tomorrow. Woo hoo.

Try this thread. A few other people commented on the store.

Let me also add that if you are here Sept. 9-10, don't miss the Crossroad's Gun Show at the fairgrounds in Phoenix. http://www.crossroadsgunshows.com/ $12+$6 parking to get in, but still cheaper than gas for driving around all day to gun shops. Most of the local dealers have booths there.

Thanks for the Cabela's thread link, silhanek.....

:banghead:

I'm arriving on Monday the 11th.:(

Only weekend flights from Alice Springs connect direct with Brisbane .

Is there another similar sized gunshow coming up this year?

The December SAR/Crossroads show in Pheonix is one of the best in the nation.

J & G Sales in Prez-kit is the best place around for purchaseing surplus ammo.

You guys got a pretty "loose" definition of "north".
Remember that about 1/2 of "Northern Arizona" is Indian Reservation.

In Flagstaff we got 3 major gunshops, "Ruffs", "The Pistol Parlor" and "Horizion Shooters"
Ruffs has some good prices on new guns, The Pistol Parlor has a OK sellection of used guns, and Horizions is the most expensive, but has class 3 stuff.

If you don't mind travelling to the Colorado River area you could check out Longhorn Trading Post in Bullhead City or Sam's Shooter Emporium in Lake Havasu City. Sam's has an indoor range where you can test fire a used gun before purchasing.

Area around Kingman and Golden Valley is about to grow like mad , Prescott area real estate is already higher priced as result of past growth.

I have two brothers living north of Kingman in Dolan Springs and try to spend a couple months there during winter. Not a bad area to look at and with the Dam bypass due to be completed in 2009? there should be room for value growth on property there - straight shot on 93 to Vegas.

That's good advice, mnrivrat....

I'm a desert-rat through and through.

The daughter picked Snowflake for her horses.;)

I know just about the whole state of AZ is growing at hyper speed -
we can only hope most of the newcomers are 'gun' folks.

Thanks Axman. I'll get over to the Colorado at some stage.
That area's still growing fast as well, isn't it?

I happen to live in Golden Valley. As a side note, if you are looking for a used firearm, don't rule out pawn shops. Many times you can get a decent used gun for half of what a new one costs. In the last year, here in my neighborhood, there are 6 new houses and I have a feeling it isn't going to stop anytime soon. I used to be the only house on my road and now there are 4 more. Most of these people are people leaving California. Last one out of CA please turn off the lights!

If it was me I'd give High Noon a pass and go somewhere else, my wife and I have been there 5 times in the last year. Each time we went in the guys working there were either rude or just stood and talked to each other and ignored us. It turned out OK though as we bought 6 guns at J&G and a couple more at High Country.

Pistol Parlor and Ruff's are good places in Flagstaff.

Bruno Shooters Supply off Deer Valley Road in North Phoenix has a ton of stuff for shooting.

Some of us are doing everything we can to convert those who aren't. Even in my small, rural, conservative corner of the state, I'm seeing more and more students in my classes who have no idea which end of the barrel is "up." Used to be that my classes emptied when deer season started.

Four more days....

I'm departing Alice Springs on Sunday.

Flying out of Brisbane on 9/11 :neener:

Thanks for all the info on gun shops.:)

Axman:

When I lived in Las Cruces, N.M., "E-Z Pawn" was my choice of shops.
When a pawn shop knows guns and realistically prices them, there can
be some good bargains to be had.

We need to provide barrels on all the Colorado River crossings labelled:

"Californians: Please deposit left-coast values in barrel before proceding."

2400:

So J&G is also a major retail shop as well as mail order?

Do they do transfers?

One of the benchrest shooters here at the local SSAA club also
told me about Bruno Shooters Supplies. They must have a wide range of supplies if an outback Aussie buys from them!

History Prof:

I know the phenomenon. Back in the early '80's at ENMU in Portales, N.M., one of my colleagues was a lecturer in the Ed. Dept. We got to talking one day about shooting and he unlocked his materials cabinent to show me his
HK-93. :what:
There was an active ROTC program on campus and the rifle team was not bad. Nowadays it seems that the demographics of urban America are working against us both politically and culturally.
Many young folks that would have been shooters and hunters a half century ago are discouraged by the constant bombardment of anti-gun media. Keep up the good work. Every human ought to at least know which end of a barrel is up.;)

Does anyone know if there are any THR Arizona gatherings planned?

J&G does have a retail shop at their location that is definatly worth the visit. You can look at all the cleaned up versions of the stuff in their catalog. Then, when you purchase, they go to the back and bring up a box of cosmoline with a rifle in it. :neener:

I haven't attended any get togethers in AZ and don't know if any are currently planned, but know they have them from time to time.

I enjoy going to many of the gunshops in the state and frequent the gunshows also. Through them I find local dealers with better selection and service and then go to their shops. http://www.crossroadsgunshows.com/ has a big show every other month or so at the Phoenix fairgrounds. The biggest one of the year is in December. There are other gunshows at the fairgrounds and other places. You could probably find one every weekend if you wanted to.
