Take this for what it's worth, because I have very little personal experience with a .380...
My concealed carry instructor is an old friend, retired LE, but from what I hear is one of the most highly regarded handgun tactics trainers in my area. He's a Glock fan, but recommends 642/442 for a minimum CCW for folks like me that aren't handgun experts and want a smaller and light CCW.
He always advocated against .380s for SD... "Poor manstopper", and mostly because of poor reliability because small autos just couldn't pack powerful-load function into a shrunken mechanism...
Until he got an LCP.
He's for the first time impressed with a .380 in the LCP, with the newer higher-power SD loads available, and says range experience among both he and his friends at the FOP range has proved the LCP to have reliability that's near flawless. So he now recommends the LCP for when summer-wear requires a SD pistol that is really small and light.
I'm going to get one when the rush wears off.
my .02,
Les
