Not to steal your thread but I have a Model 37 and want to Pocket carry it I would like to have a good back pocket holster...I plan on getting one for the front pocket but I know that I want a Milt Sparks...I thought that Hedley made a Back pocket but I could not find it on his site only a front pocket

Dan,

For some really nice wood grips, call Craig Spegel. I got a set of his better-than-standard grade boot grips for my Model 36 and am quite pleased. The gun is very shootable and looks good. I don't think he uses email or has a Web site, so I just called him. The number I have is 503-368-5653.

Don't purchase a Taurus unless you don't mind if it locks up on you every now and then without warning. :banghead:
I would stay with either a S&W or a used Colt. I have a Colt Cobra and a S&W M&P .38 snub.

The only complaint that I have with the S&W Airweight J frame revolvers is with the finish on the barrel and cylinder. It isn't very durable and will easily rub off. This has happened to a 637 and a 638 that I carried. The finish can be completely removed with metal polish resulting in a polished stainless barrel and cylinder, which looks ok. The 638 also lost some of the clear coat on the frame where it rubbed the leather pocket holster. Good shooting guns though.

I've read a lot about the finish flaking off and in the end I decided that wouldn't really matter to me since this will be a tool for me. Trust me, I have my pretty guns, but I don't really care if this is one.

Just out of curiousity, has anybody ever thought about powdercoating the frame if it's that much of an issue? Seems like it would be super durable. I don't know if it would hold up to the heat from the barrell or not though. Just a thought...

Thanks for the tip on the grips Scott. I've been looking at his and Ahrends grips. They both make some nice ones...just wish I could set my hands on each.

I have my Taurus M85UL, which is the compact light weight 38spcl with a hammer spur. Due to the spur, it might not be what you're looking for, but I have really enjoyed mine. I only pocket carry it in coats or a vest. Mostly, when carried it is in a IWB holster. I thought about bobbing the hammer, but the gun also spends time as my wifes nightstand gun and she likes to thumb cock it. I practice with the dbl actin pull and it is easily to master. I like the hammer lock, having a two year old. PS the gun is move of a top drawer of the chest-of-drawers.

Basically, I like Taurus guns. There are light and affordable and reliable. My next gun will be the Tracker in 357.

Maybe not a "pocket snubby" in the truest sense, but quite possibly a viable alternative...

I've been carrying the same weapon for a few years now but have been unable to find speedloaders for it. Have you?
BTW, mine carries great in an ankle holster.

speedloaders
Yes. I use the HKS-CA44 speedloaders. They were originally designed for the Charter Arms .44 SPL; this is what HKS recommends. Surprisingly, they work perfectly with the .45 Colt Taurus.

Had the 342pd for almost a month now and love it. You can find them used for a pretty decent price. I just never got used to the Taurus trigger or I would have gone that route.

Well, got to shoot my newest addition this weekend and I was extremely impressed. It's a very accurate gun, even with the super short barrel and fixed sights. Definitely a keeper! Can't wait for my High Noon Holster to show up...

I have three Taurus snubbies, a model 85, a 617 and a 851BUL. The 851 is the only one I would consider a pocket gun. I use an Uncle Mike's pocket holster with it. I would have no problem recommending it. I have fired a few hundred rounds now through the 851 with no issues. Many more than that through the other two. I've never had a problem with any of my Taurus revolvers locking up, but I do clean them and maintain them properly.

If there is any chance you can try before you buy, that will help.

Thanks, Catbird. I'll order a couple. Where do you purchase your leather for it?

Personaly for a pocket gun, I'll either go with a Taurus 651 (.357) or the 851 (.38), not sure which yet, but leaning towards the 651 which iirc will allow you to fire either the .357mag or the .38spl and the cost between the two weapons is the same.

BluesBear, I had a Taurus M431 all-steel .44 Special; Every so often, when firing DA, it would "lock up" and the trigger would not budge. All it took to clear it was to thumb back the hammer & fire a round SA; then proceed DA (until the next incident).

Probably could've been fixed by the manufacturer, but I wasn't that fond of it, anyway.

Honestly, I would have bet the rent on picking it up and firing 5 rounds DA with no glitches. The problem seemed to arise after firing (or even dry firing) a couple of cylinders, rapid-fire DA. After 10-15 fast DA cycles, every attempted trigger squeeze was a crap shoot.

scbair, I have seen that condition with 5 or 6 S&W revolvers. With every one it was nothing more than a case of dirty internals.
I say dirty because every one was cured by cleaning and properly lubing the internals. In one case it looked like it had never been lubed ever at all.

Anyway, it's usually just a case of a sticky hammer sear.

Every so often, when firing DA, it would "lock up" and the trigger would not budge.
I've heard that situation called "trigger balk". It is often caused by NOT allowing the trigger to return fully forward (100%) before attempting to pull it again. In an interview with speed shooter Jerry Miculek, he remarked that this is precisely why he takes his trigger finger completely off the trigger between shots.

BluesBear, I am familiar with that, and lack of lube was the first thing I suspected (I bought the M431 NIB from a dealer, shortly after the model was introduced). I'm a veteran DA revolver shooter (luv my old S&Ws), and immediately ensured the internals (especially the bolt/bolt spring area) were lightly lubed with CLP; made no difference at all. I never fired it enough to "dirty" the internals; I estimate I only fired 150-200 rounds of factory ammo through it. I then tried to "outlast" the problem; dry fired the heck out of it at every opportunity; again, it won!

Catbird, I am also familiar with failure to fully release the trigger resulting in lock-up. I fire a lot of rounds through several different DA revolvers; Colt, S&W, Ruger an old Hi Standard Sentinel, and even another Taurus (M94). I've never had this experience with any of these, and my DA trigger work is pretty consistent . . .

I gotta conclude there was a timing issue with that specimen. I actually suspect that, as friction from rapid cycling caused some internal part(s) to expand slightly, the bolt didn't drop out of the notch before the hand began trying to rotate the cylinder.

S&W 442

My wife really likes the S&W 442. It has an aluminum body, concealed rigger and steel cylinder. she has been carrying it for over 7 years.

I am partial to the S&W 638.its hammerless design allows for operating in your pocket or a womans purse.dont let the weight of any gun get you down . you will get used to whatever you carry.i carry an N frame or a full size 1911 everyday.the only time i feel uncomfortable is when they are not on my side.

legends dont grow on trees, i should know i am one.--cant remember who said that.
