I have a H&R 922 sa da revolver in 22 rim fire that shoots 6 to 7 inches high at 15 yards with standard velocity 22 long rifle ammo. the faster the ammo goes the higher it shoots. the gun has never been shot and i dont know what ammo it was originally meant to shoot. it has fixed sights so i was wondering if anybody here knows what ammo could be used to bring the poi down to where the sights are? i dont want to modify the gun any keep it original.

Elwoodm,

Try standard velocity 1050-1080 fps. As for the fixed sights short of altering the physical sight about all you can do is take a lesser front sight. It's gonna be a trial and error to find what shoots to the sights.

You can shoot shorts, long and long rifle through that revolver as well as birdshot. You may well find the shorts shoot to POA----as a general rule, heavier slugs shoot higher lighter faster slugs shoot lower.

i thought when the gun was made it was able to shoot any 22 ammo made. 22 ammo now is far different from back then. i have seen this with my winchester model 67 from the early 1920s that shoots well with standard velocity but hates high velocity. off to buy some 40gr longs ill start with that. i wonder if this gun had an owners manual from H&R as i would not see my father throwing it away ?????? time for the wikki mobile bat man:scrutiny:

Pistol sights are usually regulated for 25 yds/meters to hit center of a standardized target. The rounds will typically impact 5 to 6 inches above the top of the sight for a pistol that is usually used for target shooting as the standard 25 yard target is approximately 10-12" in diameter. The proper sight alignment and aim point for target shooting is illustrated in the picture below. For non standardized distances or targets you have to adjust either the point of aim or the sight alignment. Try lowering the front sight so the top of the post is at the bottom of the notch and see if that brings down your point of impact enough to shoot targets that are closeer than regulation.

Elwoodm, you said in your first post that you shot standard velocity ammo from it already. To me that is 40gn 1050 fps stuff. Instead try some HV rounds using 36gn bullets. The lighter and faster bullets will exit the barrel sooner in the recoil cycle and tend to hit lower. It may well be enough of a difference to get you down to where you're hitting at 15 yards on or close to the POA.

If it still shoots high then I'd say Steve is right and it was set up for that "lollypop" style sight hold on set targets at set ranges. But it seems odd that an inexpensive "plinker" would be set up with sights that require a competition style sight hold.

You should check the muzzle as well to see if there's a ding of some sort which could be pushing the bullets off line. Mind you that is a REAL shot in the dark.

i got some hv cci and winchester that are 36gr. should set up a target at 15 yards and run these through the chrono to see relationship of speed to poi. another thing about this gun dont know if its safe to keep a round under the hammer or only load 8 rounds with the hammer on the empty. i dont think the hammer can go forward without the trigger being pulled but am not going to take a chance on that. time to go get a bunch of different types of ammo and see what works.
