You ain't from around here, KY
Just got back from Poinsett Shooting range near Shaw AFB in South Carolina. And I am not impressed with my expirence with the range. Now I would like to point out I have shot many times and qualified on military ranges. I am used to strict range masters, but the staff at this range sets a whole new bar. Granted, the facilities were decent, but it seems that if you look to be under 30 you are treated like a child. Two of my co-workers (one 23, the other 19) and myself (20) were hounded from the start. Before we even began shooting an older gentleman (not the RM) walked up to our bench as we were unpacking (several rifles and two pistols, all were unloaded, actions open, safteys on, and pointed downrange) he then rudley asked if we were shooting pistols. I told him no, he then rudley informed us that they needed to be put away. Also I was upset that the range master picked up my Ruger 10/22 with aftermarket stock and barrel, and Leupold scope. Examined the bolt to enshure it was open, then dropped it back on the wooden bench like a cheap rusty hammer:what:. This was after he asked if the action was open (I told him it was, saftey on and magazine out also) I always choose saftey first, second, and third when shooting. I observe the rules, simply because you can never be too safe. But when it comes to a point where a RM is watching every move you make like an overbearing dictator, and you and your buddies are baby sat simply because you look young. Too much is too much. Never once did he ever ask anyone else if their weapons were safe and unloaded. I am sad to say that I will probly never visit this range again. Simply because of the rude treatment by the staff. Lastly, my two coworkers and myself have all qualified with the M16 in BMT, and I have qualified expert with both M16 and M9. I can safley say that even Poinsett Range is more strict than any military shooting range, and the staff and most patrions were less than friendly. Too bad, it really was a nice range.

Ice, PM me and I'll get you and your buddies on the Mid Carolina Rifle Club range in South Congaree. A bit further drive and $150 a year, but our ration of idiots is pretty low. My schedule is pretty open, be happy to host you guys and show you around.

FWIW, in 19 years of being a member, never witnessed (or heard of) anyone touching a weapon he or she wasn't invited to touch. :fire:
